Biological Engineering
Biological Engineering [BE] was founded in 1998 as a new MIT departmental academic unit, with the mission of defining and establishing a new discipline fusing molecular life sciences with engineering. The goal of our biological engineering discipline, Course 20, is to advance fundamental understanding of how biological systems operate and to develop effective biology-based technologies for applications across a wide spectrum of societal needs including breakthroughs in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease, in design of novel materials, devices, and processes, and in enhancing environmental health. The innovative educational programs created by BE reflect this emphasis on integrating molecular and cellular biosciences with a quantitative, systems-oriented engineering analysis and synthesis approach, offering opportunities at the undergraduate level for the SB degree in Biological Engineering, and at the graduate level for the Ph.D. in Biological Engineering (with emphasis in either Applied Biosciences or Bioengineering).

Protein transport and trafficking
Proteins are transported across cellular membranes and between membrane-bound organelles inside vesicles by carrier proteins. Understanding these processes has been a major goal of cell biology for several decades. Increasingly, efforts are focusing on providing a molecular description of the structures and mechanisms of the complex protein components that are required to carry out these processes. This special web focus presents a selection of papers covering the latest advances in this area, which will be of interest to a wide range of biologists engaged in different fields of research.
Drosophila
Nature is delighted to present a special issue on Drosophila biology, genomics and evolution. Papers include reviews on the unique place of the fruit fly in laboratory studies in many fields of biology, and analyses of ten novel Drosophila primary genome sequences. These sequences allowed researchers to examine genes and transcripts on an entire phylogenetic framework simultaneously, and will assist studies in most areas of biology.

In Celebration of Dr. Mario R. Capecchi's Nobel Prize : This year, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine goes to Drs. Mario R. Capecchi, Martin J. Evans and Oliver Smithies for their discoveries of principles for introducing specific gene modifications in mice by the use of embryonic stem (ES) cells. This technology, commonly referred to as gene targeting or knockout, is based on homologous recombination between DNA sequences residing in the chromosome and newly introduced DNA to mutate any genes of interesting in mouse genome. ...More IJBS announces "

The Oklahoma Biological Survey is both a research unit of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Oklahoma and a state office. Our purpose is to gather, analyze and disseminate information regarding animal and plant forms and ecological communities within the state and associated geographical areas. In addition to scholarly research and publication, we provide information to citizens, organizations, businesses, and agencies concerning Oklahoma's biota, and we assist in the protection and preservation of the natural heritage of Oklahoma. Our faculty and staff also teach and provide hands-on training to students at the University. Oklahoma Biological Survey

Biodiversity for Food Security

16 October 2004
How does Biodiversity benefit natural and agricultural ecosystems?
PRODUCTIVITY: Conservation and management of broad-based genetic diversity within domesticated species have been improving agricultural production for 10,000 years, however diverse natural populations have been providing food and other products for much longer. A wide range of species provides many thousands of products through agriculture and from the harvest of natural populations. High production levels are sustained through maximising the beneficial impact of ecosystem services for agricultural, modified and natural ecosystems. ADAPTATION: A diverse range of organisms contributes to the resilience of agricultural and natural ecosystems, their capacity to recover from environmental stress and their ability to evolve. Informed adaptive management of agricultural and natural biodiversity, above and below ground and under water secures sustained production. MAINTENANCE OF ECOSYSTEM FUNCTIONS: Essential functions such as nutrient cycling, decomposition of organic matter, crusted or degraded soil rehabilitation, pest and disease regulation, water quality, and pollination are maintained by a wide range of biologically diverse populations in natural ecosystems and in and near agricultural ecosystems. Maintaining this diversity of species and building on and enhancing ecosystem functions reduces external input requirements by increased nutrient availability, improved water use and soil structure, and natural control of pests.

CONVENTION ON THE PROHIBITION OF THE DEVELOPMENT, PRODUCTION AND STOCKPILING OF BACTERIOLOGICAL (BIOLOGICAL) AND TOXIN WEAPONS AND ON THEIR DESTRUCTION
Biological and chemical weapons have generally been associated with each other in the public mind, and the extensive use of poison gas in World War I (resulting in over a million casualties and over 100,000 deaths) led to the Geneva Protocol of 1925 prohibiting the use of both poison gas and bacteriological methods in warfare. At the 1932 - 1937 Disarmament Conference, unsuccessful attempts were made to work out an agreement that would prohibit the production and stockpiling of biological and chemical weapons. During World War II, new and more toxic nerve gases were developed, and research and development was begun on biological weapons. Neither side used such weapons. President Roosevelt, in a statement warning the Axis powers against the use of chemical weapons, declared: Use of such weapons has been outlawed by the general opinion of civilized mankind. This country has not used them, and I hope we never will be compelled to use them. I state categorically that we shall under no circumstances resort to the use of such weapons unless they are first used by our enemies.
