MIT's Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences stands at the nexus of neuroscience, biology and psychology. We combine these disciplines to study specific aspects of the brain and mind including: vision, movement systems, learning and memory, neural and cognitive development, language and reasoning. Working collaboratively, we apply our expertise, tools, and techniques to address and answer both fundamental and universal questions about how the brain and mind work.

Cultural insights

Brain scans support surprising differences in perception between Westerners and Asians. East is East and West is West, and the difference between them is starting to turn up even on brain scanners. Researchers catch rats' twitchy whiskers in action In a finding that could help further understanding of perception across species, MIT neuroscientists have used high-speed video to reveal rat whiskers in action and show the tiny movements that underlie the rat's perception of its tactile environment. This work was recently featured in both Neuron and Time

Cognitive Liberty Discussed

Author and Legal Scholar Jeffery Rosen explores new developments in technology and law "that threaten our privacy and mental freedom, leading some to call for the legal system to respond with a new concept of 'cognitive liberty'."
NEW CCLE REPORT:
Life Sentences: The Collateral Sanctions Associated with Marijuana Offenses
Our latest study examines the true impact of a marijuana conviction. A misdemeanor conviction for possession of marijuana can trigger automatic bars on educational aid, a bar on serving as a foster parent, denial of federal housing assistance, revocation or suspension of occupational licenses, suspension of one’s driver’s license, and much more.
The CCLE is dedicated to protecting and advancing freedom of thought in the modern world of accelerating neurotechnologies. Our paramount concern is to foster the unlimited potential of the human mind and to protect freedom of thought.

http://www.edwardtufte.com/tufte/books_pp
In corporate and government bureaucracies, the standard method for making a presentation is to talk about a list of points organized onto slides projected up on the wall. For many years, overhead projectors lit up transparencies, and slide projectors showed high-resolution 35mm slides. Now "slideware" computer programs for presentations are nearly everywhere. Early in the 21st century, several hundred million copies of Microsoft PowerPoint were turning out trillions of slides each year.
Alas, slideware often reduces the analytical quality of presentations. In particular, the popular PowerPoint templates (ready-made designs) usually weaken verbal and spatial reasoning, and almost always corrupt statistical analysis. What is the problem with PowerPoint? And how can we improve our presentations?

The intent was to develop a classification system for three domains: the cognitive, the affective, and the psychomotor. Work on the cognitive domain was completed in 1956 and is commonly referred to as Bloom's Taxonomy of the Cognitive Domain ( Bloom et al., 1956). Others have developed taxonomies for the affective and psychomotor domains The major idea of the taxonomy is that what educators want students to know (encompassed in statements of educational objectives ) can be arranged in a hierarchy from less to more complex. The taxonomy is presented below with sample verbs and a sample behavior statement for each level. LEVEL DEFINITION SAMPLE
