Welcome to the Academy of Cognitive Therapy Website
We are a non-profit mental health organization founded by leading experts in the field of cognitive therapy. We are dedicated to serving those afflicted with mental health disorders by providing referrals and educational resources about cognitive therapy to the general public, and identifying and certifying clinicians who are truly qualified and effective cognitive therapists.
The Academy of Cognitive Therapy (ACT) has a thorough application process specifically for cognitive therapists, including the review of taped cognitive therapy sessions. We are committed to certifying only those cognitive therapists that demonstrate true competence in cognitive therapy. If you are a consumer, you might be interested to know that cognitive therapy has been clinically demonstrated to be effective for dozens of disorders. To find out more about cognitive therapy and disorders that can be treated, please visit the Consumers section of our website. Brain and Cognitive Sciences
The human brain is the most complex, sophisticated, and powerful information-processing device known. To study its complexities, the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology combines the experimental technologies of neurobiology, neuroscience, and psychology, with the theoretical power that comes from the fields of computational neuroscience and cognitive science. The Department was founded by Hans-Lukas Teuber in 1964 as a Department of Psychology, with the then-radical vision that the study of brain and mind are inseparable. Today, at a time of increasing specialization and fragmentation, our goal remains to understand cognition- its processes, and its mechanisms at the level of molecules, neurons, networks of neurons, and cognitive modules. We are unique among neuroscience and cognitive science departments in our breadth, and in the scope of our ambition. We span a very large range of inquiry into the brain and mind, and our work bridges many different levels of analysis including molecular, cellular, systems, computational and cognitive approaches.

Description
Cognitive Systems Research covers all topics in the study of cognitive processes, in both natural and artificial systems. The journal seeks top-quality contributions and encourages, in particular, articles that transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries (in terms of implications or in terms of approaches).
(1) The journal emphasizes the integration/synthesis of ideas, concepts, constructs, theories, and techniques from multiple paradigms, perspectives, and disciplines, in the analysis, understanding, and design of cognitive and intelligent systems.
(2) Contributions describing results obtained within the traditional disciplines (e.g., psychology, artificial intelligence) using well-established paradigms are also sought (especially if such work has broader implications and relevance).

  • Introduction In 1983, A Nation at Risk was published. It called attention to the serious problems of schooling in America. The major problem was that schools had not kept pace with society's expectations and needs for the rapidly changing world of the twenty first century. (Cognition and Technology Group, 1994, p.23) In order to succeed in the twenty first century schools must graduate students who are prepared to be lifelong learners. This challenge necessitates a pedagogical shift from transmitting a body of expected knowledge that is largely memorized to one that is largely process oriented. For example, instead of having students memorize the names of the battles of the Civil War, a teacher might have teams of students each focus on one battle and prepare a presentation on it using first-hand letters, testimonies, and photos. The concept of multiple intelligence comes into play here as well. Our traditional concept of intelligence include an overemphasis on verbally-loaded skills. Expanded views of intelligence are especially important because people's beliefs about the nature of intelligence can affect their assessment of their own capabilities and their actual performance. (Cognition and Technology Group, 1994, p.25) Howard Gardner lists the following seven areas of intelligence: linguistic, logical/mathematical, musical, artistic, spatial, bodily/kinesthetic, interpersonal and intrapersonal. Giving students a chance to share a wide variety of kinds of intelligence adds to their confidence and belief in themselves as intelligent and competent learners, that no matter what the task they will be able to learn to do it.

What Is The Cognitive Rift Between Humans And Other Animals?
ScienceDaily (Feb. 22, 2008) See also: In new work presented for the first time at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Marc Hauser, professor of psychology, biological anthropology, and organismic and evolutionary biology in Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences, presents his theory of "humaniqueness," the factors that make human cognition special. He presents four evolved mechanisms of human thought that give us access to a wide range of information and the ability to find creative solutions to new problems based on access to this information. "Animals share many of the building blocks that comprise human thought, but paradoxically, there is a great cognitive gap between humans and animals," Hauser says. "By looking at key differences in cognitive abilities, we find the elements of human cognition that are uniquely human. The challenge is to identify which systems animals and human share, which are unique, and how these systems interact and interface with one another." Recently, scientists have found that some animals think in ways that were once considered unique to humans: For example, some animals have episodic memory, or non-linguistic mathematical ability, or the capacity to navigate using landmarks. However, despite these apparent similarities, a cognitive gulf remains between humans and animals.
