A cognitive analysis of tagging
(or how the lower cognitive cost of tagging makes it popular)
Rashmi's theory of tagging - my hypothesis about the cognitive process that kicks into place when we tag an item, and how this differs than the process of categorizing. In doing so, my hope is to explain the increasing popularity of tagging, and offer some ideas regarding the design of tagging / categorization systems. My ideas are mostly based on my observations about how people tag and relating it to on academic research in cognitive psychology and anthropology. This is a first version, which I expect to revise as I learn more. Feedback is very welcome. The rapid growth of tagging(1)in the last year is testament to how easy and enjoyable people find the tagging process. The question is how to explain it at the cognitive level. In search for a cognitive explanation of tagging, I went back to my dusty cognitive psychology textbooks. This is what I learnt.(2) Categorization is a 2-stage process. Stage 1: Related Category Activation The first stage is the computation of similarity between the item and candidate concepts. For example, I come across the book "Snowcrash" in my library. Immediately a number of related semantic concepts get activated: "book", "science fiction", "Neal Stephenson", "Zodiac". Other concepts might be more personal; e.g., "favorite author", "airplane trip". Still other concepts activated might be more about the physical characteristics, e.g., "paperback", "bad condition".

A Survey of Cognitive and Agent Architectures
The objective of this document is to provide some rational, structured access to an analysis of cognitive and agent architectures (for more information on accessing the document, see the Reader's Guide ). Twelve architectures have been used for this preliminary analysis representing a wide range of current architectures in artificial intelligence (AI). The aim of the project is to facilitate both an understanding of current architectures and provide insight to the development of future, improved intelligent agent architectures. This work was based on publications from 1992 and before and has not been authorized by the researchers responsible for particular architectures (see for additional information). : The terms node link document contextual , and non-contextual are defined separately.) HISTORY OF COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY
- compiled by the Cognitive Processes Classes, Fall, 1997 - 18th CENTURY: THE BRITISH EMPIRICISTS
George Berkeley
Berkeley's most influential essay is A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge. It was this that earned Berkeley the title of "subjective idealist,' imaterialist," "Spiritualist," and these are what helped to make his small book one of the more misunderstood essays in philosophy. What Berkeley set out to achieve was the removing of validity from materialism and to do this by refuting the latent or explicitly materialistic content both in Locke's Essay and in Descartes' and Hobbes' "geometric " theories" of man and society. David Hume (1711-1776)
James Mill (1773-1836)
James Mill believed that the human mind was totally passive. He felt that the mind was a machine functioning in the same way as a clock, acting upon external stimuli. His most important work and contribution to psychology is his book, Analysis of the Phenomena of the Human Mind, written in 1829. Mill states that the mind must be studied through its reduction or analysis into elementary components. Mill believed that ideas and sensations are only certain kinds of mental processes. He felt that ideas result as a process of sensations that have occurred at the same time in a certain order. Thus, James Mill was considered a British empiricist, focusing on the primary role of sensation processes and the relationship between conscious processes and association. John Stuart Mill, who believed in Mental Chemistry, was the son of James Mill.

::Home:: Welcome to the Center for Cognitive Science Cognitive Science is concerned with the architecture of the mind, that is, the components of the mind, how they are organized, and how they function. Research in Cognitive Science at Ohio State pursues the following three objectives:
  • the development of precise formal theories on the various mental faculties, based on careful experimental inquiry the construction of computational models of the various mental faculties the understanding of the biological mechanisms that underlie mental faculties.
  • The fundamental mission of the Center is to stimulate interdisciplinary research and curricular activities across the disciplines that deal with the workings of the mind. Members of the Center come from many affiliated departments and divisions of the University.

    http://www.magneticfields.org/sky/aarc/noncartesian.html
    Non-Cartesian Cognitive Science
Traditional Cognitive Science is Cartesian in the sense that it takes as fundamental the distinction between the mental and the physical, the mind and the world, the subject and the object. It is this Cartesianism which leads to such claims as that cognition must be representational and that what sets cognizers apart is the fact that they exhibit "aboutness". It is the aim of this page to bring together non-Cartesian approaches to the study of cognition. That means that the main point which holds this page together is the idea that mind and body form a unity , not a union. Guttorm Floistad (1983) speaks of Spinozism to allude to non-Cartesian approaches to the mental. Under that heading, there is room for many different themes. Here's a short overview:
    Conscious Experience and Phenomenology
Cartesianism, in its materialist guise, leads to the view that consciousness is an epiphenomenon, that qualia have no causal efficacy. Such a counterintuitive claim does not have to be held by the Spinozist, so she will be interested in the actual content of experiences.
    Body
A direct implication of the claim that mind and body form a unity is that when there is talk of the mind, there must be talk of the body as well. Experiential content is rooted in bodily structure.

Study Finds Improved Cognitive Health among Older Americans Rates of cognitive impairment among older Americans are on the decline, according to a new study supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) comparing the cognitive health of older people in 1993 and 2002. Higher levels of education were associated with better cognitive health. Researchers said the findings will need to be explored further to see if they can be observed in other studies and to pinpoint factors influencing cognition, or the ability to think, learn, and remember. "These data suggest that we may be experiencing a shift in the cognitive health of older Americans," said Richard J. Hodes, M.D., director of the NIA. "Continuing to track trends will be critically important both for chronicling changes in brain health and for achieving a better understanding of factors that may play a role." The data come from the NIA-supported Health and Retirement Study (HRS), a national, longitudinal examination of health, retirement and economic conditions of more than 20,000 men and women over 50. Researchers tested memory and judgment of a large subset of HRS participants to determine cognitive status in two groups of people, those age 70 and older in 1993 and in 2002. The scientists then followed each group for two years to track death rates. They also looked at levels of education, income, and other factors in each group, finding that the 2002 participants were wealthier and had significantly higher levels of education, with 17 percent college-educated compared to 13 percent in 1993.
