The Evolutionary Robotics Homepage
This page include links to research labs and researchers involved in Evolutionary Robotics. It also include links to relevant journals and resources and a selected bibliography. Evolutionary Robotics is a new technique for the automatic creation of autonomous robots. It is inspired upon the Darwinian principle of selective reproduction of the fittest. It is a new approach that looks at robots as autonomous artificial organisms that develop their own skills in close interaction with the environment without human intervention. Heavily drawing from natural sciences like biology and ethology, evolutionary robotics makes use of tools like neural networks, genetic algorithms, dynamic systems, and bio-morphic engineering. Evolutionary Algorithms:
Genetic Algorithms, Evolutionary Programming and Genetic Programming
Overview
Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) are search methods that take their inspiration from natural selection and survival of the fittest in the biological world. EAs differ from more traditional optimization techniques in that they involve a search from a "population" of solutions, not from a single point. Each iteration of an EA involves a competitive selection that weeds out poor solutions. The solutions with high "fitness" are "recombined" with other solutions by swaping parts of a solution with another. Solutions are also "mutated" by making a small change to a single element of the solution. Recombination and mutation are used to generate new solutions that are biased towards regions of the space for which good solutions have already been seen. Pseudo-code for a genetic algorithm is as follows: Initialize the population Evaluate initial population Repeat Perform competitive selection Apply genetic operators to generate new solutions Evaluate solutions in the population Until some convergence criteria is satisfied An extended discussion of issues involved with the implementation and use of evolutionary algorithms is included here . Several different types of evoluationary search methods were developed independently. These include (a) genetic programming (GP), which evolve programs, (b) evolutionary programming (EP), which focuses on optimizing continuous functions without recombination, (c) evolutionary strategies (ES), which focuses on optimizing continuous functions with recombination, and (d) genetic algorithms (GAs), which focuses on optimizing general combinatorial problems.

An Informal History of Evolutionary Biology Web Site
This is an informal and incomplete guide to the history of evolutionary biology from about 1800 to about 1950. It is maintained by John Alroy . Its main emphases are on the late 19th century and on paleontology. However, I hope to see the coverage become more comprehensive in the near future. If you have any comments or suggestions or wish to contribute to the site, I strongly encourage you to do so; please write me . The only limits on contributions are that they must follow the site's format and carry your byline. Contributors to date include Mark Largent. New features on the site include a facelift of the bibliography page , and a review of Pacific Visions (M. Smith). The site's other main features currently are:

Infecting mosquitoes is an essential step in the life-cycle of malaria parasites and parasites produce specialised male and female sexual stages to do this job. When they find themselves in a mosquito gut, parasites mate with each other and then spend 2-3 weeks in their mosquito before can be transmitted to new hosts. (Photo: Sinclair Stammers) The Institute of Evolutionary Biology is one of the largest groupings of evolutionary biologists in the world. We study evolution in the broadest possible sense, from virtually every angle and using a great range of organisms and techniques. Our strengths include speciation and population genetics, molecular ecology, genetics of complex traits, behaviour and social evolution, life history studies, biodiversity, molecular evolution and parasite-host interactions. Introduction
Quick introduction covering the basic ideas of evolutionary game theory illustrated with many examples. This section briefly introduces classic games such as the Prisoner's Dilemma, the Hawk-Dove- or Snowdrift game and the Rock-Scissors-Paper game. It is intended as an overview of the many features and capabilities of the interactive virtual labs.
Via freedom to coercion: the emergence of costly punishment
Tutorial on the role of voluntary participation in joint effort games for the evolution of costly punishing behavior. The freedom to withdraw from common enterprises leads to the enforcement of social norms. Joint enterprises which are compulsory rather than voluntary are less likely to lead to cooperation. Evolutionary Religious Studies: A New Field of Scientific Inquiry
Charles Darwin and other early evolutionists were fascinated by religious phenomena and how they might be explained from an evolutionary perspective. Nevertheless, evolutionary theory became restricted to the biological sciences and excluded from the study of many human-related subjects for most of the 20th century. Only now is the theory being used to explain all aspects of humanity in addition to the rest of life. The new field of evolutionary religious studies is part of this larger trend. This website provides an introduction to the study of religion from an evolutionary perspective. It includes the following features: that explains how religion can be approached from an evolutionary perspective and how this new approach can be integrated with other perspectives. directory of scientists and scholars from all backgrounds who have become interested in studying religion from an evolutionary perspective. religious conceptions of the afterlife , which is intended to provide a model for projects on other elements of religion. If you are a religious scholar who is knowledgeable about a particular religious system and its conception of the afterlife, then you are invited to join this project.

    Featured research in traditional farming
During the last several centuries, traditional farmers in the high granite mesas in eastern Portugal south of the Douro river invested great effort to tend a large number of sheep. This is in spite of the fact that the sheep produced very few lambs, little milk, low quality wool, and were not eaten. Professor George Estabrook
In this major rye growing region of Portugal, about half the rye produced was carried away to feed urban populations. Rye grain is an important nitrogen source for the village agro-ecosystem. Farmers replaced this loss using a nitrogen-fixing plant, giesta, to make compost for crop fertilization.
