The Gestalt Principles SIMILARITY CONTINUATION CLOSURE PROXIMITY Gestalt is a psychology term which means "unified whole". It refers to theories of visual perception developed by German psychologists in the 1920s. These theories attempt to describe how people tend to organize visual elements into groups or unified wholes when certain principles are applied. These principles are: Similarity Similarity occurs when objects look similar to one another. People often perceive them as a group or pattern T he example above (containing 11 distinct objects) appears as as single unit because all of the shapes have similarity Unity occurs because the triangular shapes at the bottom of the eagle symbol look similar to the shapes that form the sunburst. You need to know about the operating environment if your application takes advantage of hardware or software that is not available on all Macintosh computers. You can also use the Gestalt Manager to inform the operating system that your software is present and to find out about other software registered with the Gestalt Manager. Carbon supports the Gestalt Manager. However, the results returned by Gestalt functions in Mac OS X are relevant only to your application's context. In general, the Gestalt function returns a different result when called from a Carbon application running in Mac OS X than it returns when called from a Classic application in Mac OS X, because these are different environments. For example, Carbon does not use a ROM, so calling Gestalt from a Carbon application on a beige G3 Macintosh computer and passing the ROMVersion selector returns a different result than Gestalt returns for a Classic application on the same computer. 13. Gestalt Psychology
gestalt Psychology, founded by Max Wertheimer, was to some extent a rebellion against the molecularism of Wundt’s program for psychology, in sympathy with
Gestalt Psychology Dr. C. George Boeree Gestalt Psychology It had its roots in a number of older philosophers and psychologists: Ernst Mach (1838-1916) introduced the concepts of space forms and time forms . We see a square as a square, whether it is large or small, red or blue, in outline or technicolor... This is space form. Likewise, we hear a melody as recognizable, even if we alter the key in such a way that none of the notes are the same. Christian von Ehrenfels (1859-1932), who studied with Brentano in Vienna, is the actual originator of the term Gestalt as the Gestalt psychologists were to use it. In 1890, in fact, he wrote a book called On Gestalt Qualities . One of his students was none other than Max Wertheimer. He is best known for the idea of imageless thoughts He oversaw the doctoral dissertation of one Max Wertheimer. Max Wertheimer He published his seminal paper in 1912: "Experimental Studies of the Perception of Movement." That year, he was offered a lectureship at the University of Frankfurt. In 1916, he moved to Berlin, and in 1922 was made an assistant professor there. In 1925, he came back to Frankfurt, this time as a professor. In 1933, he moved to the United States to escape the troubles in Germany. The next year, he began teaching at the New School for Social Research in New York City. While there, he wrote his best known book

Gestalt Psychology
"Gestalt theory began toward the close of the 19th century in Austriaand south Germany as a protest against associationist and structural schools' piecemeal analysis of experience into atomistic elements." Max Wertheimer, Wolfgang Köhler and Kurt Koffka collaborated to found Gestalt. (Britannica) Early studies dealt with illusion, for example, the Kanizsa triangle , which we used as the background for many of our pages. As you look at the Kanisza triangle, a boundary can be seen where the perceived white triangle meets the white background; a boundary between white and white!
"The Gestalt psychologists (Koffka, 1935; Köhler, 1940) believed that a number of innate tendencies influence the way we see. While many contemporary psychologists maintain that even these tendencies are the result of experience and learning, all agree that they are strong and virtually universal tendencies." (Darley et. al. 114)
David Marr
, who thought that many who investigated vision were "misled by the apparent simplicity of the act of seeing," approached the matter at a more basic level: how he recognize lines and other elements. (Marr 30) Look at the image (Gombrich 104)of "The < > must get done,"
