Definition: The German word Gestalt literally means "configuration" or "figure" and is used to refer to any general pattern which manifests characteristics different than are inherent in its parts. For example, a musical piece has a Gestalt because the tune and melodies are characteristics which it has, but which none of the individual notes have. Similarly, a sentence has a Gestalt because it has a characteristic of its meaning which none of the individual words or letters have. These characteristics of the whole are called emergent properties or supervenient properties. The concept of Gestalt is used in a theory when it attempts to treat its subjects as unified wholes because any attempt to simply deal with the parts will mean that vital properties of the whole will go unattended. For example, Gestalt psychology attempts to study human behavior as a whole phenomenon because individual aspects of the mind or consciousness would not be the same thing. The movement which lead to the creation of Gestalt Theory grew out of dissatisfaction with the more traditional atomistic methodology in science. Beginning in the 1920s (although there were precedents which can be found even earlier), some philosophers and psychologists questioned the common methodological presuppositions which dictated that the study of any phenomenon had to proceed by breaking it down into constituent parts. Anything which could not be broken down could not be studied scientifically - as a result, important aspects of human experience were left to more mystical and religious explanations.

Welcome to
The GESTALT Workbench
Large amounts of 'raw' genomic sequence data already exist and continue to grow exponentially. Many tools are available for automated analysis of these data by comparison to known sequences or by pattern recognition. One of the hardest problems is how to present the sequence data and its derived annotation in an intuitive way. We present here a workbench for analysis of large-scale genomic sequence data, with strong emphasis on the production of enriched graphical representation of the analysed data. The GESTALT Workbench can execute a variety of external analysis programmes (e.g. for gene recognition) as well as internal analyses (e.g. compositional complexity analysis); the resulting analysis output files are stored in an internal database. Integrating the analysis results, a Gestalt * is created for each sequence. Much biological insight can be obtained at a glance from these sequence pictorial representations, which prove to be a valuable aid in quick and intuitive sequence interpretation. The GESTALT Workbench is designed to pose minimal technical requirements on the user's end.

GESTALT THERAPY
(Provided by the Gestalt Therapy Center of The East San Francisco Bay Area) Gestalt Therapy is a powerful experiential psychotherapy focusing on contact and awareness in the here and now. By following their client's ongoing process, with special attention to both the therapeutic relationship and the client's style of interrupting that process, the Gestalt Therapist can help their client to both work through and move beyond their painful emotional blocks. This frees them to begin to explore new behavior, first in the "safe emergency" of the therapeutic relationship and/or group and then, as appropriate, in the outside world. The emphasis of the therapy is not on talking about what has happened but on fully experiencing both what is, and what can be.

Welcome to the Pennsylvania Gestalt Center for Psychotherapy and Training. The Center, founded in 1973, by Mariah Fenton Gladis, MSS, QCSW, is the first center in the Delaware Valley of Pennsylvania to offer Gestalt psychotherapy and training. GESTALT THERAPY One of the most interesting approaches was introduced by Fritz Perls. It was his workshops which first really put Esalen on the map. The Esalen Institute was the world's first growth centre, and people came to it from all over the world. What Perls did was to make everything very immediate. He was always emphasising the here and now. People would start telling him about their lives or their problems and he would stop them, saying - "Do you hear the quality of your voice? Can you hear the fear in it?" - or - "What is your right foot doing? What would it say to you, if it could talk?" This threw people out of their familiar story, their familiar mood, their favourite ways of engaging with other people, and forced them to attend to wha was going on with them in the present. With Perls, awareness was the key to everything. He would say that better than trying to change something, the thing to do was simply to be aware of it - fully aware, deeply aware - and with that awareness the thing could change of itself, if that's what was needed. He would not allow people in his workshops to talk about other people not in the room. He dismissed that as gossip and avoidance. You would have to talk to the other person, as if they were here and now in the room. What this does is to raise the emotional intensity of whatever you are saying considerably: many people now recognise the importance of this.

Gestalt Framework Theory
Gestalt Theory (GT)
Humans Open Systems
Gestalt Theory (GT) is a broadly interdisciplinary general theory which provides a framework for a wide variety of psychological phenomena, processes, and applications. The focus of GT is the idea of " grouping ", i.e., characteristics of stimuli cause us to structure or interpret a visual field or problem in a certain way (Max Wertheimer, 1922). The primary factors that determine grouping are: (1) proximity - elements tend to be grouped together according to their nearness, (2) similarity - items similar in some respect tend to be grouped together, (3) closure - items are grouped together if they tend to complete some entity, and (4) simplicity - items will be organized into simple figures according to symmetry, regularity, and smoothness. These factors are called the laws of organization and are explained in the context of perception and problem-solving.
The essence of successful problem-solving behavior according to Wertheimer is being able to see the overall structure of the problem : "A certain region in the field becomes crucial, is focused; but it does not become isolated. A new, deeper structural view of the situation develops, involving changes in functional meaning, the grouping, etc. of the items. Directed by what is required by the structure of a situation for a crucial region, one is led to a reasonable prediction, which like the other parts of the structure, calls for verification, direct or indirect. Two directions are involved: getting a whole consistent picture, and seeing what the structure of the whole requires for the parts."

Strength Gardening?
Everybody knows that exercise is good for the body as well as the soul. Most of us, though, have some trouble translating that bit of knowledge into action. Well, if you can't seem to find that healthy activity you've been searching for, why not try gardening? A recent column in the Evansville Courier Press says, "The variety of moves required in gardening can tone your muscles; help you maintain balance and burn from 250 to 350 calories an hour, depending on your size and how strenuously you work." Did that pique your interest? Read the whole article
