The online editor abundantly thanks Alvin and Myra White for providing the medium and the message of Humanistic Mathematics, a concept and creation which has enriched the lives of so many. The interested reader can trace the Network's journey in the Archives. As Alvin reaches his golden 80's, we conclude that it is time to hand to someone else the humanistic torch. Hopefully ideas about a new kind of Humanistic Mathematics will find a home under a new name, with a vision that befits our current times. The beat of the woodenfish poises the mind and establishes a tempo so that an assembly of people can chant in unison.
Because fish do not have eyelids their eyes always remain open even when they sleep. Therefore, they symbolize to the Buddhist cultivator ever present wakefullness and awareness.

Humanism and Mathematics Education
The idea that teaching, learning, and creating mathematics issues from the same psyche as literature, aesthetics, and music has attracted, since 1986, a worldwide network of people who share this belief. The existence of the Humanistic Mathematics Network has encouraged individuals and groups to try new approaches to teaching, doing, and publishing.

Announcing the Carl Sagan memorial blog-a-thon
Next month, December 20, 2006 will mark the tenth anniversary Carl Sagan's passing. In his honor, I am organizing a special memorial "blog-a-thon" among Sagan's fans throughout the blogosphere. If you're a Sagan fan with a blog, you can participate by posting something related to him on or near that date. Read or reread a Sagan book and review it; discuss cool things that you've done that's been influenced by him; pontificate on one of the many topics he treated (SETI, astronomy, critical thinking, the history of science, human intelligence....), or post about something completely surprising. Contact me by email or by leaving a comment, and then when the date approaches, I will create a meta-post that links to all the stuff people are doing, providing a network of the participating bloggers.
A list of Sagan stuff online that may be a source of ideas.

Publicity for the blog-a-thon includes Cornell University's Chronicle Online The Ithaca Journal digg bOING bOING , and countless blogs. Welcome, everybody, and thanks to all who have publicized it!

Humanism: An Introduction
Humanism is a philosophical movement that emphasises the personal worth of the individual and the centrality of human values. The Humanistic approach rests on the complex philosophical foundations of existentialism, and emphasizes the creative, spontaneous and active nature of human beings. This approach is very optimistic and focusses on noble human capacity to overcome hardship and despair.
Carl Rogers (1902-1987)
The idea that we are responsible for our own lives, embodied in existentialism, is exemplified in the work of Carl Rogers. However Rogers approach was extremely OPTIMISTIC. Rogers believed that “The organism has one basic tendency and striving- to actualize, maintain, and enhance the experiencing organism” (1951, p. 487). Rogers believed that all people have a tendency toward growth = ‘Actualization’. The need to maintain and enhance life. The goal of existence is to satisfy this need. This desire to preserve and enhance oneself is on one level:
