The term neuropsychology has been applied to both lesion studies of humans and animals and efforts to record electrical activity from individual cells (or groups of cells) in higher primates (including some studies of human patients). It is scientific in its approach and shares an information processing view of the mind with cognitive psychology and cognitive science It is one of the more eclectic of the psychological disciplines, overlapping at times with areas such as neuroscience philosophy (particularly philosophy of mind neurology psychiatry and computer science (particularly by making use of artificial neural networks In practice neuropsychologists tend to work in academia (involved in basic or clinical research), clinical settings (involved in assessing or treating patients with neuropsychological problems - see

This page leads you to articles, links, and resources for learning more about the discipline of clinical neuropsychology, the study of brain and behavior. The short article, "Neuropsychology 101: An Introduction" , introduces essential information about understanding behavior from the perspective of brain structure, function, and disease. Additional articles provide information about neuropsychological assessments , both full examination and screening examination . The article on functional domains discusses in somewhat more detail the kinds of cognitive behaviors the neuropsychologist examines. Finally, a list of commonly used neuropsychological tests provides brief descriptions of the tools used to evaluate functional domains.

The brainthe master control for the entire body and the starting point for virtually all behavioris probably one of the most complex and challenging topics for anyone to study. Its myriad neurons, dozens of chemical messengers, and infinite interconnections provide the fascination that attracts neuroscientists to study it. Volume 22, Issue 2 Identical neural risk factors predict cognitive deficit in dyslexia and schizophrenia. Leonard, Christiana M.; Kuldau, John M.; Maron, Leeza; Ricciuti, Nikki; Mahoney, Bryan; Bengtson, Michael; DeBose, Cheryl Abstract Permissions Article abstract: [Hide] In previous work, the authors found that an anatomical risk index created from the combination of 7 neuroanatomical measures predicted reading and oral language skills in individuals with learning disabilities. Individuals with small auditory brain structures and reduced asymmetry had more deficits than those with large structures and exaggerated asymmetry. In the present study, the same anatomical index predicted reading and other cognitive abilities in 45 individuals with chronic schizophrenia. The anatomical risk index was significantly associated with broad cognitive ability (Pearson r = .53, p < .0001), reading comprehension (r = .58, p

  • Pediatric or child neuropsychology is a field of study involving the relationship of abilities, behaviors and mental skills (cognitive functions) in children. Clinical, pediatric or child neuropsychology (neuropsych) involves the application of this field to diagnostic assessment and clinical treatment of normal and abnormal child developmental, medical, psychiatric, and neurological conditions or problems. The field shares a knowledge base with other professions. A child or pediatric neuropsychologist may work with other pediatric specialists in behavioral neurology, developmental pediatrics, pediatric neurology, child psychiatry, pediatricians, occupational therapists and speech and language therapists.
Neuropsychologists are licensed as psychologists or in some states neuropsychologists. By definition, in almost all states, these individuals have doctoral degrees from accredited programs by the American Psychological Association usually in clinical psychology or neuropsychology. To be considered a neuropsychologist one must have formal graduate level training and clinically supervised experience in neuropsychology.
Most psychology licensing boards require a year of internship, which may be pre-doctoral as well as one year of supervised residency. Modern definitions of a neuropsychologist now usually require two years of supervised post-doctoral experience.
