PNS originated in 1979-80 as the Philadelphia Clinical Neuropsychology Group and served as the early source of communication and collaboration among a growing group of clinicians practicing neuropsychology in the greater Delaware Valley. It was among the earliest regional neuropsychology organizations in the United States. The journal Neuropsychology was founded by PNS in 1988 and published at Drexel University until APA bought the journal in 1990. PNS has been sponsoring bi-annual symposia since 1982 featuring prominent neuropsychologists.
PNS is composed of individuals interested in brain-behavior relationships. The organization is open to all interested clinicians, researchers, educators, and consumers. PNS promotes professional development by sponsoring annual workshops and serves as a resource in the Delaware Valley for information about neuropsychology.

17 Feb 2008 10:22 The attempt to understand mental functions by correlating them with the activities of particular parts of the brain. The science might be said to have really begun with Paul Broca's classic paper showing how a particular form of aphasia was caused by damage to a particular region of the brain. For many years such lesion studies formed almost the sole probe available to neuropsychologists, and the ingenuity in some lesion studies is truly astounding. I recall having read someplace, but cannot now find the citation, that one of the things which made the early studies possible was the replacement, first in the American Civil War and then in the Franco-Prussian War, of muskets by rifled bullets, which left much smaller wounds - the result being that, if a soldier survived a head wound, he was much more likely to have a specific disorder, rather than just being generally "cracked in his intellectuals" (as Patrick O'Brian's characters would say). Be that as it may, for many years the best and most active neuropsychologists in the world were to be found in the Soviet Union, for two reasons:
  • They had official support for being materialist and analytical, at a time when Western neuroscience was often sunk in holistic or behaviorist darkness, and leading neuropsychologists reciprocated by dressing their findings up in appropriate dialectical language (easily divided through for);

    Neuropsychology of hypnosis:
    Seed Magazine discusses how researchers are exploring the neuropsychology of hypnosis to understand this curious state of mind. Hypnosis fell out of favour in psychological circles as it got taken up by 'stage hypnotists', and researchers found out that, contrary to the movie stereotypes, hypnosis actually increases the number of false memories recalled, rather than making remembering more accurate. Furthermore, 'hypnotherapy' seems not to be hugely effective on the current evidence. For example, trials of hypnosis for pain relief when giving birth and smoking cessation have shown mixed results, although it is known to be difficult to design effective trials because hypnotisable individuals are known to be psychologically different from others. What is a reliable finding, however, is that in particularly susceptible individuals, hypnosis can be used to cause unusual experiences. Particularly, it is being used as a model of what is alternatively called 'conversion hysteria' or ' conversion disorder ', where a person might show physical symptoms, such as paralysis, but where they arise from a psychological cause.

    Mission Clinical Care
    Neuropsychological services are integrated with the many clinical and experimental Neurosurgical programs, and include the entire developmental span from infancy to diseases associated with aging. Although the main focus of clinical care is neurosurgical, neuropsychological services are also provided to patients in general neurology, pediatrics, and trauma. Clinical care is provided by the Neuropsychology faculty and psychometrician staff. The core faculty in neuropsychology consists of Michael Westerveld, Ph.D. Dr. Westerveld supervises and directs the delivery of clinical neuropsychological services in the Department of Neurosurgery. Dr. Stoddard provides general neuropsychological consultations for inpatient and outpatient services, and directs the therapeutic and rehabilitation component of the clinical program. Cortical stimulation for functional mapping during phase III (i.e., invasive electrophysiological recording) determines the precise location of sensory, motor and language cortex. Cortical stimulation and neuropsychological assessment during Phase IV (surgery) allows for more precise assessment of language function in the surgical field. Post-operative cognitive examinations facilitate the provision of rehabilitative and psychotherapeutic services and re-integration to the community.

      An introduction
      Cognitive psychology is the scientific investigation of cognition , that is, of all mental abilities: perception, attention learning memory , processing of spoken and written language , thinking, reasoning and belief formation (Coltheart, 2002). It assumes that cognition can at least in principle be fully revealed by the scientific method, that is, individual components of mental processes can be identified and understood. These individual components of mind are mental modules, and thus contemporary cognitive psychology often assumes the modularity of mind (Fodor, 1983). Any theory about any domain of cognition will therefore be a theory about (a) what the modules are of the system by which performance in that domain is accomplished, and (b) what the pathways of communication between these modules of the system are; that is, a theory about the functional architecture of the system. Most cognitive psychologists seek to develop and test such theories by experiments with people who are skilled performers in the relevant cognitive domain. But one can also learn about cognitive systems by studying ways in which they break down after
