The Laboratory was initiated in 1990 and in the ensuing years has published over 125 articles, abstracts, and book chapters, and has made over 200 professional presentations. Current grant funding for the laboratory includes: multi-year grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH: R01, STTR and T32); multi year grants from National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR: Advanced Multidisciplinary Training Program); grants from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (Pilot Grant and multi-year Research Grant); and funding from the Henry H. Kessler Foundation. The laboratory conducts collaborative research with over 25 other individuals locally, nationally, and internationally. Mission Statement
The mission of the KMRREC Neuropsychology and Neuroscience Laboratory is to provide training and conduct basic and applied research in human cognition including its underlying neuroanatomic and neurophysiological foundations and its rehabilitation in clinical populations. Research in the laboratory examines neuropsychological deficits associated with a variety of clinical populations, including individuals who have experienced aneurysms of the anterior communicating artery (ACoA), stroke, multiple sclerosis (MS), Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).

The 1980's saw two important developments in the sciences of the mind: The development of neural network models in cognitive psychology, and the rise of cognitive neuroscience. In the 1990's, these two separate approaches converged, and one of the results was a new field that we call "Computational Neuropsychology." In contrast to traditional cognitive neuropsychology, computational neuropsychology uses the concepts and methods of computational modeling to infer the normal cognitive architecture from the behabvior of brain-damaged patients. In contrast to traditional neural network modeling in psychology, computational neuropsychology derives constraints on network architectures and dynamics from functional neuroanatomy and neurophysiology. We thus propose a workshop to expose the NIPS community to the amazing patient cases in neuropsychology and the sorts of inferences that can be drawn from these patients based on computational models, and to expose researchers in computational neuropsychology to some of the more sophisticated modeling techniques and concepts that have emerged in recent years.

Faculty Psychodiagnostic Testing Service The MMHC Clinical Neuropsychology Service evaluates approximately 100 patients per year at MMHC, most of whom are referred by the MMHC Continuing Care program. Many other referrals come from Boston area colleges and universities, where we are known as experts in adult learning and attention deficit disorders. The evaluations are performed by the clinical post-doctoral trainees in neuropsychology while under supervision. Now under the direction of Dr. Bill Stone, the neuropsychology fellowship was initiated by Dr. Seidman as a small neuropsychology training program in 1986 at MMHC for advanced psychology trainees, which involved part-time supervised experience. This has evolved over the past 15 years into a major, collaborative post-doctoral training program with the Beth Israel-Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) beginning in 1993. This program entails rotations at both MMHC and BIDMC, an extensive series of seminars, and opportunities for research. Until 1994, virtually all trainees were MMHC post-interns who stayed on for advanced neuropsychology training. When the HMS Department of Psychiatry consolidated into one department, we opened up our training program to all HMS Psychology Department programs. The fellows provide all neuropsychological services to MMHC clients.

  • Why is the origin of the word, neuropsychologist? WHAT IS A NEUROPSYCHOLOGIST? A neuropsychologist is a professional psychologist that studies and practices neuropsychology . Neuropsychology is the study of the relationship between the central nervous system (brain and spine) and behavior, from birth to old age. Psychology is the study and profession concerning behavior and the related functions and processes of both the mind and body, in human and non-human animals. WHAT DO NEUROPSYCHOLOGISTS DO? Neuropsychologists have many different types of jobs and not every neuropsychologist does the same thing. Many neuropsychologists administer psychological tests and perform assessments to diagnose specific disorders of the brain. These brain disorders most often result in problems with thinking, emotions, and/or behavior. Neuropsychologists study ways to measure recovery from brain damage as well as strategies to rehabilitate (make better) people with brain damage and improve their care. Neuropsychologists also provide psychotherapy (a psychological treatment through talking) to patients with brain damage and try to understand ways in which a patient's environment (for example, family) improve or worsen a brain damaged patient's overall condition. Although neuropsychologists also study the functioning of the spine, most neuropsychologists focus on the functioning of the brain.

    HEALTH PSYCHOLOGY
    Neuropsychology
It is estimated that between 45% and 65% of all people with MS experience problems with memory, attention, word-finding, problem-solving, or other cognitive functions as a symptom of the disease. These cognitive changes can vary considerably from one person to another, both in type and severity. There is very little relationship between the severity of physical symptoms and the severity of cognitive problems. One person may have severe physical symptoms but no problems with cognition. Another person may be very physically fit but have severe problems with thinking and remembering. Cognitive difficulties can be particularly distressing for people because they are changes that nobody sees. Sometimes family, loved ones, or employers will believe that a person’s forgetfulness or lack of attention are willful ignoring, rather than a symptom of the MS. Many times the person with MS may not recognize that their problems with memory, attention, word-finding, and problem solving are MS-related, and he or she may worry that he or she is going crazy. Understanding the type and the source of cognitive problems is the first step for patients and their loved ones to begin coping with these symptoms effectively. Although the types of problems seen in people with MS can vary considerably, some problems are seen more frequently than others. Some people may only have problems in one area, while others may have problems in many areas. Below is a list of the types of cognitive problems many people with MS experience
