Forrest Pipher and Watson are members of instrument science teams on the fourth of the NASA Great Observatories, the Space Infrared Telescope Facility ( SIRTIF ), which is expected to contribute crucially to all of the "origins" studies. They specialize in observational studies of Galactic and extragalactic star formation, of planetary system formation through the evolution of the disks surrounding young stars, and in the development of sensitive infrared detector arrays and instruments for astronomy (see page of the infrared astronomy group). Astronomy Solar System Landmarks Part 1
Solar System Landmarks Part 1
Articles in this Topic Discussions in this Topic Jun 8, 2001
I thought for my first article, I'd keep it simple and fun. In this article, I will disucss a couple of the 'landmarks' of the solar system. A lankmark would be something wierd or amazing found on some of the planets or moons, such as Jupiter's Big Red Spot or Saturn's Rings. Something that stands out as being unique. There are so many that'd I'd figure to call this part 1 because I'm sure I won't get to them all this time. And these are in no particular order. Landmark #1: Grand Canyon of Mars This canyon is so long that if compared to Earth it would run from Maine to California. It was not formed by water like the Grand Canyon in Arizona. It was formed by geological faulting, which means the subsoil underneath collapsed. It's name is really the Valles Marineris, translated means Mariner Valley. It is over 20,000 feet deep and 120 miles wide. Landmark #2: Triton's Geysers Triton, the biggest moon around Neptune, sports some of the best geysers in the solar system. For years, Astronomers noticed dark lines across Triton. When Voyager 2 flew by, it was discovered that these lines were actually geysers. The geysers shoot nitrogen into the air up to 10 miles into the air and the wind on Triton then carries the it across the sky, forming these lines.

Astronomy/Astrophysics
Black holes, gravitational lenses, the Big Bang, dark matter, bubbles in spacetime: a science-fiction author couldn't have coined more redolent terms. They aren't from the realms of fantasy, however, but from the jargon that is the very stuff of science. Behind them lie discoveries that are changing our conception of the universe. They demonstrate that the cosmos is a much more diverse and extravagant place than previous generations might have dreamt of. We are living in a 'golden age' of astronomy and astrophysics - an age characterized by the unique and novel interplay of theoretical ideas, precision observation and technological potential. New challenges await scientists as a result.
The fields of astronomy and astrophysics incorporate planetology, stellar astronomy, galactic and extra-galactic astronomy as well as cosmology. Scientists – behind their desks, in front of computers and at their telescopes – are striving to comprehend the differing states of matter as well as the physical processes within our solar system, the Milky Way and across the entire universe. The direction and long-term development of astronomy and astrophysics research is governed by a set of all-inclusive yet fundamental questions.

Astrobiology and Interstellar Chemistry Research in astrobiology (the branch of biology concerned with the effects of outer space on living organisms) and interstellar chemistry describes the evolution of the interstellar clouds into new solar systems. Current interest focuses on spectroscopic detection of organic molecules in interstellar dust and gas, and their contribution to the organic inventory of protoplanetary disks. Theoretical projects include simulations of protostellar collapse, multifluid magnetohydrodynamic shock waves, and shock chemistry.

A portion of the night sky with false colour A one meter telescope used by Dr. Denis Sullivan
It is impossible not to be awed by the night sky. Astronomers and astrophysicists ask and seek to answer the big questions: how do stars work, how did the universe get started, how might it end.
How do I get there?
The McLellan one metre telescope at Lake Tekapo, owned and operated by the University of Canterbury, and regularly used by Dr Denis Sullivan.
At Victoria University students interested in Astronomy and Astrophysics can begin their study of these subjects in the first year. Physics 132 , Introductory Astronomy, is offered every year. Students can then follow with Physics 209, Physics of the Earth and Planets. Selected topics related to astronomy and astrophysics are covered in many of the physics courses at Vic.
Research at Vic
Dr Denis Sullivan conducts research into the interior structure of stars by studying the variations in the brightness of pulsating stars using high-speed photometry. He works in collaboration with astronomers and astrophysicists in Japan and the US. Click here to learn more about

What Activities Could Astronomy and Astrophysics Majors Do?
Astronomy is sometimes considered a subfield of physics. Astronomers use the principles of physics and mathematics to learn about the fundamental nature of the universe, including the sun, moon, planets, stars, and galaxies. They also apply their knowledge to solve problems in navigation, space flight, and satellite communications, and to develop the instrumentation and techniques used to observe and collect astronomical data.

Astronomy and astrophysics has changed our knowledge of the Universe. The Earth is not the center of the Universe. We are very small things in our Universe.
http://www.astro.princeton.edu/~msshin/study/astronomy_astrophysics.htm
Astronomy and astrophysics has changed our knowledge of the Universe. The Earth is not the center of the Universe. We are very small things in our Universe. The Univere, moreover, shows us the limited things inside it.
The progress of astronomy and astrophysics has been benefited from physics, mathematics, and computer science. The physics has transformed astronomy into astrophysics. As all science disciplines are based on the current mathematics, astronomers and astrophysicists have adopted mathematics as their research language. Since computer science has risen rapidly, the development and its ability of computer has encouraged astronomers and astrophysicists to handle massive observational data and computational tasks. If you want to know the Universe as astronomer and astrophysicist, you should study these. * Good textbooks

  • UCSC is one of the world's leading centers for both observational and theoretical research in astronomy and astrophysics. The department includes twenty-two faculty members, whose research interests range from the Solar System and the Milky Way to the most distant galaxies in the Universe and the most fundamental questions of cosmology. There are typically over a dozen postdoctoral researchers in residence, as well as a dedicated and skilled technical staff and a steady stream of visiting scientists. The UCSC department was recently ranked first in the country in research impact, based on citation studies. UCSC is also a leader in astrophysics education. The department currently enrolls about twenty-five students working towards the Ph.D. degree. Graduate students benefit from the low student-faculty ratio in the department and extensive research opportunities, as well as course offerings that cover both theoretical and observational aspects of astronomy. UCSC alumni hold positions at leading universities and research institutes around the world. The department offers an undergraduate minor in Astrophysics, and collaborates with the Physics department to offer an undergraduate major in Astrophysics.
