Biostatistics (biological statistics) or biometry is the application of statistics to a wide range of topics in biology . It has particular applications to medicine and to agriculture Note on terminology : Although the terms biostatistics and biometry are sometimes used interchangeably, biometry is more often used of biological or agricultural applications and biostatistics of medical applications. In older sources biometrics is used as a synonym for biometry, but this term has now been largely usurped by the information technology industry.

Biostatistics provides the essential methodological and quantitative underpinning necessary for much of public health and medical research. Appropriate study design, data collection and analysis are all needed in order to quantify the effect of risk factors and health interventions on individuals or populations. Areas of concentration in the Division are the development and application of methods in statistical genetics and bioinformatics, statistical epidemiology, statistical issues in clinical research including clinical trials, and the geographic information systems. ... Biostatistics creates and applies methods for quantitative research in the health sciences. Our faculty conduct research across the spectrum of statistical science from foundations of inference to the discovery of new methodology to health applications. Our designs and analytic methods enable health scientists and professionals in academia, government, pharmaceutical companies, medical research organizations and elsewhere to efficiently acquire knowledge and draw valid conclusions from their ever-expanding sources of information. The Department of Biostatistics offers doctoral (PhD) and master of science (ScM) degrees as well as a master of health science (MHS) in biostatistics for students earning a PhD in another department of the School. Our graduates have leadership careers as researchers in academic biostatistics departments, government, and industry.

Biostatistics is the application of statistical techniques to scientific research in health-related fields, including medicine, biology, and public health, and the development of new tools to study these areas. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, the field of biostatistics has become an indispensable tool in improving health and reducing illness. Biostatisticians play essential roles in designing studies, analyzing data and creating methods to attack research problems as diverse as
  • the determination of major risk factors for heart disease, lung disease and cancer

The efforts of the department and its divisions focus on the diagnosis and analysis of health issues in large human populations.
Traditionally, medical education focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of individual patients. The disciplines of biostatistics, epidemiology, genetic and molecular epidemiology, and health services research, however, deal with the diagnosis and analysis of health issues in large human populations. The results of human studies in these fields have had an enormous impact on the health related behavior of the American population. One example is the decrease in cigarette smoking and the elimination of cigarette smoking from public buildings in our society. Another visible example is the change in the American diet, away from fat and cholesterol. HIGHLIGHTS
