Chaos
We borrow a working definition for chaos theory from Dr. Stephen Kellert: The Qualitative Study of Unstable Aperiodic Behavior in Deterministic Nonlinear dynamical systems. I should briefly dissect some of these terms to better describe what is and what is not chaotic in nature:
Chaos is qualitative in that it seeks to know the general character of a system's long-term behavior, rather than seeking numerical predictions about a future state. What characteristics will all solutions of a system exhibit? How does this system change from exhibiting one behavior to another?
Chaotic systems are unstable since they tend not to resist any outside disturbances but instead react in significant ways. In other words, they do not shrug off external influences but are partly navigated by them. The variables describing the state of a system do not demonstrate a regular repetition of values and are therefore aperiodic. This unstable aperiodic behavior is highly complex since it never repeats and continues to show the effects of the disturbance(s). These systems are deterministic because they are made up of few, simple differential equations, and make no references to implicit chance mechanisms. This is not to be completely equated with the metaphysical or philosophical idea of determinism (that human choices could be predetermined as well).

SXSW: Zuckerberg Keynote Descends Into Chaos as Audience Takes Over
By Lewis Wallace Categories: SXSW Web/Tech By Megan McCarthy and Michael Calore AUSTIN, Texas They came expecting a civilized, one-on-one discussion, but they got what some attendees described as "a train wreck." Ballroom A of the Austin Convention Center was packed to capacity Sunday evening for an hour-long interview with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the keynote speaker at this year's South by Southwest Interactive festival. The 23-year-old billionaire founder of the social networking site was interviewed on stage by author and journalist Sarah Lacy. Using her unique, friendly style of interviewing closer to two friends chatting than a straight question-and-answer session Lacy tried to get the notoriously tight-lipped Zuckerberg to open up. But the discussion rarely strayed beyond the usual business fare and eventually descended into a string of awkward moments punctuated by the audience's heckling. "Talk about something interesting," one attendee yelled about halfway through the keynote. The remark was met with waves of cheering and applause.

Wendy Richmond's Surreptitious Cellphone
Posted by adam At the International Association of Privacy Professionals meeting last week, I had the pleasure of meeting Wendy Richmond. Richmond is intrigued with the ways in which we share our public space. Some of us create invisible buffer zones for quiet reverie; others enhance or negate reverie through portable technology like iPods, cell phones and laptops. These zones become the subject of her videos and stills. Satisfying in both form and content, they are psychologically riveting, intentionally beautiful, and surprisingly witty portraits of our private lives lived publicly." (From " Public Privacy " site.) I think it's tremendously cool to add an artist and their art to a business conference. Too often, we find ourselves focused entirely on questions such as cost of compliance, or forthcoming regulation. Bringing in new and different perspectives may be uncomfortable or challenging, but it's important to remember the people for whom we're doing this work. I'd encourage anyone running a conference to consider bringing in artists whose work touches, even tangentially, on the subject at hand.

An introduction to and discussion on the various aspects of the emerging science of chaos theory.
http://www.zeuscat.com/andrew/chaos/
Chaos Introduction
Chaos theory is among the youngest of the sciences, and has rocketed from its obscure roots in the seventies to become one of the most fascinating fields in existence. At the forefront of much research on physical systems, and already being implemented in fields covering as diverse matter as arrhythmic pacemakers, image compression, and fluid dynamics, chaos science promises to continue to yield absorbing scientific information which may shape the face of science in the future.
This is an introduction to chaos theory designed for those who have an interest in chaos theory but are, very much like myself, confined by an as yet underdeveloped mathematical background to theory over mathematics. Seperate archives of seven varied topics in the area of chaos theory are included, with graphics where necessary; a bibliography is also included for independent research. The rest of this homepage is a quasi-FAQ which covers much of the basic rationale and theory behind chaos theory.

Introduction
Chaos is a relatively new and exciting science. Although chaos grew slowly and was often unfavorably viewed its early stages, scientists now perform active research in many areas of the field. Presently, there are several journals dedicated solely to the study of chaos. This website was written in conjunction with a talk given for Intermediate Physics Seminar of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the Johns Hopkins University . It is intended to merely highlight a few of the more interesting aspects in the field of chaos. For further information, please consult the reference section of this document.

Introduction
Chaos is a phenonenon with many meanings depending on whom you ask. For the purpose of this tutorial, I will say that a system is chaotic if there is sensitive dependence on initial conditions. That is, if I start with two initial conditions that are very close to each other, then their difference will diverge exponentially in time. For discrete dynamical systems, it is possible to get chaotic behavior with a one-dimensional map, as you saw with the standard map. For continuous systems, the usual model for chaos is the Lorenz attractor but the mechanism through which chaos occurs for this model is somewhat difficult to explain.
The "simplest" chaotic differential equation
When the linearization of a system about an equilibrium has a zero eigenvalue for some set of parameters, this is a sign that perhaps new solutions may exist for nearby sets of parameters. If the zero eigenvalue is simple, then normal form analysis can be applied to reduce the system to a one-dimensional dynamical system. The dynamics of this one-dimensional system describes the behavior of the full system. More complicated equations arise if the zero eigenvalue is not simple. In the remainder of this tutorial, we examine an equation that arises when the linearized system has a triple zero eigenvalue that is geometrically simple. This means that the
