Computational Science The computational Earth science research activities that are driving ACES span researchers in MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory , MIT's Math Department and MIT's Earth Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences Department. Themes that are driving ACES activities include: Tools for studying non-linear and chaotic phenomona. Many vital systems studied by planetary scientists, in disciplines as diverse as seismic modeling to studying atmospheric convective processes, are highly non-linear. Large scale computational resources are a powerful tool for studying such systems and are used for evaluating theories about rate limiting processes, dominant term balances, historical and future behavior and overall system characteristics. Systems for synthesis of observational data and numerical simultaions. Increasingly planetary scientists have access to rich data-streams from remote-sensing or in-situ devices. Creating a synthesised picture of the three-dimensional, time-evolving state of the planet requires rigourously combining observational data-streams with numerical models of system behavior.

HBCU-UP Curriculum Development in Computational Science Computational Science: HBCU-UP sponsored Interdisciplinary Curriculum Development for four undergraduate courses to integrate computational science modules. In order to better prepare students for the workforce as well as graduate schools, the interdisciplinary curriculum component aims at exploring new approaches of strengthening existing curriculum based on the notion of computational science. Computational Science was described as a multidisciplinary field that uses advanced computing capabilities to understand and solve complex problems. [ Source ] For us, Computational Science fuses three distinct elements: (a) algorithms (numerical and non-numerical) and modeling and simulation software developed to solve science (e.g., biological physical, and social), engineering and humanities problems; (b) computer and information science that develops and optimizes the advanced system hardware, software, networking, and data management components needed to solve computationally demanding problems;

Computational Science (Co-op and Regular)
About
Computational Science is a relatively new program that combines computer science courses from the Faculty of Mathematics with science courses from the Faculty of Science. The program is designed to meet the emerging need for computer-literate scientists in the rapidly evolving information technology sector.
Specializations
As a computational science major, you decide whether to remain in the broadly-based un-specialized version of the program or focus your studies on one of the available specializations. These include:
  • Biochemistry Chemistry Earth Sciences Physics
First Year Courses
Our Computational Science program has a core of 7 computer science courses, 6 mathematics courses and 7 science courses. Selecting 1 of the 5 available options will then add another 13 or 14 science courses to round out your program. You'll develop both a solid computer science base and a sufficiently deep understanding of one of the science disciplines to tackle effectively the types of problems that require sophisticated computer modeling.

Educational portal Quantum Mechanics science This unit introduces computational science to middle-school students ( ages 10-15 ) and provides activities that explore basic questions such as what "science" is and how computational science can be used to solve problem. This module will introduce you to how quantum mechanical calculations can be used to investigate chemical processes. An online portal to the program GAMESS is used to run calculations and explore commonly used methods for computing. Examples are given for several molecules that are in the environment. This lab class is a support of a Quantum Mechanics class. The student will learn how to proceed a computational investigation on molecular structure adn properties.Through series of exersise he will learn how to use GAMESS and graphical software that will complete the theory seen in class.
This is a simple web site where you could find help to understand what we can do with GAMESS and also useful tutorials to learn how to create input files and to interpret the output files of GAMESS.

1. Introduction
1.1 An Overview of STEP
From the 1993 Summer Workshop handouts , the goals of the Supercomputer Teacher Enhancement Program (STEP) were to:
  • use computational resources to enhance the teaching of high school science; connect the high school classroom with the computational world outside; allow the high school teacher to develop an understanding of how science is currently done and introduce teachers to the tools of computational science and High Performance Computing and Communications (HPCC).
STEP was initially written and designed by a team from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) and San Diego State University (SDSU). The grant provided three years of funding, from January 1993 through June 1996. The field of computational science was fairly new in January 1993, so materials were designed and written for the first workshop in July 1993. As a historical view of the Internet and computational science, these materials are still available, now via the Wide World Web. An overview of how to access these materials is contained in the Appendix of this paper

In practical use, it is typically the application of computer simulation and other forms of computation to problems in various scientific disciplines such as Physics. Computational science and computer science are very different fields. The field is distinct from computer science (the mathematical study of computation, computers and information processing). It is also different from theory and experiment which are the traditional forms of science and engineering. The scientific computing approach is to gain understanding, mainly through the analysis of mathematical models implemented on computers. Scientists and engineers develop computer programs, application software, that model systems being studied and run these programs with various sets of input parameters. Typically, these models require massive amounts of calculations (usually floating-point) and are often executed on supercomputers or distributed computing platforms.
