Hilbert's theorem (differential geometry)
In differential geometry Hilbert's theorem (1901) states that there exists no complete regular surface S of constant negative Gaussian curvature K immersed in . This theorem answers the question for the negative case of which surfaces in can be obtained by isometrically immersing complete manifolds with constant curvature.
Hilbert's theorem was first treated by David Hilbert in, "œber Fl¤chen von konstanter Kr¼mmung" (Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 2 (1901), 87-99). A different proof was given shortly after by E. Holmgren, "Sur les surfaces   courbure constante negative," (1902).
Proof
The proof of Hilbert's theorem is elaborate and requires several lemmas. The idea is to show the nonexistence of an isometric immersion of a plane S to the real space . This proof is basically the same as in Hilbert's paper, although based in the books of Do Carmo, and Spivak.
Observations : In order to have a more manageable treatment, but without loss of generality, the curvature may be considered equal to minus one, K . There is no loss of generality, since it is being dealt with constant curvatures, and similarities of

    Differential geometry
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Differential geometry is a mathematical discipline that uses the methods of differential and integral calculus to study problems in geometry . The theory of plane and space curves and of surfaces in the three-dimensional Euclidean space formed the basis for its initial development in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. Since the late nineteenth century, differential geometry has grown into a field concerned more generally with geometric structures on differentiable manifolds . It is closely related with differential topology and with the geometric aspects of the theory of differential equations . The proof of the Poincare conjecture using the techniques of Ricci flow demonstrated the power of the differential-geometric approach to questions in topology and highlighted the important role played by the analytic methods.

April 21, 2007, 06:22 PM The question is what do people think about the big crush theory, in relation to the passing of time, and how it is a continuous process rather than something with a beginning and a end. placebo messiah April 22, 2007, 12:12 AM I thought the big crush theory was already dismissed because the dark matter effect was past critical, so the universe is generally accepted to be perpetually expanding. April 22, 2007, 10:34 AM Well I don't really know much about dark matter, so cannot really comment on that. placebo messiah April 22, 2007, 02:08 PM Here ya go:

Astronomic evidence suggests the universe is actually accelerating away from itself.
    accelerating!
a big crush theory would at least require the universe to decelerate under its own gravity once the initial push of the big bang was removed. Jesse April 22, 2007, 02:23 PM It's actually dark energy that's postulated to explain the observational evidence for accelerating expansion:

    differential geometry
The study of geometry using calculus ; it has many applications in physics, especially in the general theory of relativity . The objects studied by differential geometry are known as Riemannian manifolds (see manifold ). These are geometrical objects, such as surfaces, that locally look like Euclidean space and therefore allow the definition of analytical concepts such as tangent vectors and tangent space, differentiability (see differential ), and vector and tensor fields. Riemannian manifolds have a metric , which opens the door to measurement because it allows distances and angles to be evaluated locally and concepts such as geodesics curvature , and torsion to be defined.
