Does the entropy of search logs indicate that search should be easy?
Qiaozhu Mei had a fun talk at WSDM 2008 with dramatic, sometimes outlandish, but always thought-provoking statements about web search based on an analysis he did with Ken Church on the Live Search weblogs.
The paper, "Entropy of Search Logs: How Hard is Search? With Personalization? With Backoff?" ( ACM page ) covers much of the talk and adds more detail. An excerpt: Although there are lots of pages out there, there are not that many pages that people actually go to ... [We] estimate the entropy of URLs (and queries and IP addresses) based on logs from Microsoft's www.live.com. We find that it takes just 22 bits to guess the next URL (or next query or next IP address). That is ... millions, not billions.
Large investments in clusters in the cloud could be wiped out if someone found a way to capture much of the value of billions [of indexed pages] in a small cache of millions.
So, this is one of the dramatic, thought-provoking, outlandish claims. Qiaozhu is arguing that analysis how many pages people actually go to in Live Search seems to indicate that a relatively small cache of pages (millions) would be sufficient to capture almost all searchers. During the talk, he took this even further, saying that there might be some possibility of fitting a search index of all the pages you might care about on a flash drive.

Calculating Entropy for Data Mining

Information theory (IT) is a foundational subject for computer scientists, engineers, statisticians, data miners, biologists, and cognitive scientists. Unfortunately, PHP currently lacks software tools that would make it easy to explore and/or use IT concepts and methods to solve data analytic problems. This two-part series aims to remedy this situation by:
  • Introducing you to foundational information theory concepts. Implementing these foundational concepts as classes using PHP and SQL. Using these classes to mine web data.
  • This introduction will focus on forging theoretical and practical connections between information theory and database theory. An appreciation of these linkages opens up the possibility of using information theory concepts as a foundation for the design of data mining tools. We will take the first steps down that path.
    Univariate and Bivariate Entropy
    The central concept of this series is entropy The goal of this article is to explore the descriptive uses of entropy in the context of summarizing web access log data. You will learn how to compute entropy for a single database column of values (i.e., univariate entropy) and what the resulting entropy score means. The goal is to obtain a practical appreciation for what entropy measures in order to tackle inference problems that arise in more complex bivariate and multivariate contexts.

By combining thermodynamics with information theory, MIT researchers (contact Seth Lloyd, 617-252-1803, slloyd@mit.edu) have determined the minimum amount of information one needs to bring an unruly object under control, providing quantitative answers to such subjects as taming chaos. From the perspective of thermodynamics, controlling an object means reducing its disorder, or entropy. Lowering the disorder of a hot gas, for example, decreases the number of possible microscopic arrangements in the gas. This in turn removes some of the uncertainty from the gas's detailed properties. According to information theory, this reduced uncertainty is tantamount to increased information about the gas. Applying this "digital entropy" perspective to the notion of control, the researchers found that controlling an object becomes possible when one acquires enough information about it (and then applies this information to the object) to keep the uncertainties in its properties at manageable levels. Chaotic systems are particularly hard to control because they constantly manifest new amounts of uncertainty in their properties. Perhaps there is no better everyday example of chaos than steering a car: a tiny change in steering can quickly be amplified into a huge change in course. For example, if a blindfolded driver initially knows that her car is within two feet from a curb, tiny fluctuations in steering can make this uncertainty 4 feet after one second, 8 feet after two seconds, and so on. Only if the driver receives second-by-second instructions for adjusting the steering to keep the uncertainty down to the two-feet level does she have any hope of controlling it. If the driver makes such steering adjustments only half as frequently, her car will go out of control (crash into the curb) but it will take exactly twice the amount of time than if no adjustments were made.     Entropy is for many people one of the most confusing topics that they hit in introductory physics. Most introductory physics terms like energy, velocity, and temperature refer to things that we are familiar with in our day to day life and have built some intuition for. Few people start taking physics with any intuition for entropy, however. Many popular science books and articles discuss entropy, though, usually equating it with "disorder" and noting that according to the laws of physics disorder and ther efore entropy must always increase. Such accounts rarely in my experience make any attempt to define what is meant by disorder or how you would measure whether it is increasing or decreasing. Entropy is a well-defined quantity in physics, however, and the definition is fairly simple. The statement that entropy always increases can be derived from simple arguments, but it has dramatic consequences. In particular this statement explains many pro cesses that we see occurring in the world irreversibly.

    If you weren't careful, you might think gravity could violate the 2nd law of thermodynamics. Start with a bunch of gas in outer space. Suppose it's homogeneously distributed. If it's big enough, it will start clumping up thanks to its gravitational self-attraction. So starting from complete disorder, it looks like we're getting some order! Doesn't this mean that the entropy of the gas is dropping? Well, it's a bit trickier than you might think. First of all, you have to remember that a gas cloud heats up as it collapses gravitationally! The clumping means you know more and more about the positions of the atoms in the cloud. But the heating up means you know less and less about their velocities. So there are two competing effects. It's not obvious which one wins! Let's do a little calculation to see how this works. The trick is to keep things simple so we can easily see what's going on. This requires some idealizations.

    Last night we had high winds in the midwest. Our house lost a piece of gutter and my office window blew open scattering papers everywhere. I interpret entropy to mean that the wind could not possibly have left my room neater than it was. Entropy also argues in favor of refactoring. Sure there are arguments against refactoring and we pointed to them this summer when the debate heated up after Bob Cringely wrote an article based on correspondence with Paul Tyma . Tyma wrote "'Cleaning up code' is a terrible thing. Redesigning WORKING code into different WORKING code (also known as refactoring) is terrible. The reason is that once you touch WORKING code, it becomes NON-WORKING code, and the changes you make (once you get it working again) will never be known. " And yet I look at the loose papers covering my floor. Everything I need is there. It is possible, if I take the time to organize these papers into piles and folders that I will spend time on pages that I will never need to look at again. Perhaps that time is wasted. But when it comes time for me to find something I need, I'd like to be able to put my hand right on it.
