Standard Molar Entropy
Entropy is defined as the degree of freedom that particles of matter have. We use the letter "S" to symbolize entropy. Gases have a greater entropy than pure liquids which have a greater entropy than pure solids. Solutions have a greater entropy than pure liquids as the particles in a solution are more separated and solvent molecules separate the solute particles: S gas > S soln > S liq > S solid
Second Law of Thermodynamics
Change in Entropy
The change in entropy, delta S, is the difference between the final entropy and the initial entropy of a system. For a Chemical Reaction (system) it would be the entropy of the product state minus the entropy of the reactants, S f - S i . The Delta S may be positive if there is an entropy increase as happens when solid reactants produce liquid and gaseous products. Since liquids and gases are higher in entropy, we would expect the product state to have a higher entropy and the difference in Entropy to be positive. On the other hand if you have a chemical process where a precipitate forms such as: Ag (aq) + Cl (aq) > AgCl(s) The entropy of the solid product is lower than the original aqueous ions. Teh Delta S would be negative in this case. One should be able to predict the sign on Delta S by noting the physical state of the reactants and products. There are three rules that one can use as a guideline for making such predictions.

Total Recall 2070 (1999)
March 30, 2008 in Detective Film Science Fiction TV ... No comments created by Art Monterastelli Blade Runner and Total Recall They also played out the whole P.K. Dickensian paranoia angle, human brain implants, human androids slowly taking over and all that. Overall an excellent show that got shot down far too soon. Rating: 5/5
White Night (2007)
March 30, 2008 in Books Detective Fantasy No comments by Jim Butcher
9th Dresden File Considering how long this series has gotten, the main question every new book is: is it still good? Well, as these questions are (mostly) subjective, I can only answer for myself: White Night Rating: 5/5
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
March 30, 2008 in Animation Fantasy Film No comments by Disney Considering how old this movie is, it has really nice animation. The rest is just too old-fashioned for my taste. I like fairy tales, but I prefer characters with a little more depth than grumpy and sleepy and chirpy (the princess). Even the evil stepmother is rather boringly evil. Rating: 2/5
To Reign in Hell (1984)

MEDC Ltd
Incorporating MaxEnt Solutions Massive Inference Techniques Maximum Entropy Data Consultants Ltd (MEDC) specializes in custom and semi-custom software for Bayesian data analysis, including the the maximum entropy method and massive inference. If you need to estimate the parameters of a physical distribution given some data, then we can help! Applications include:
  • Image processing, using either direct or Fourier data deconvolution, reconstruction from sparse data, motion deblurring. Tomographic reconstructions CAT and PET scanning. Magnetic Resonance Imaging Spectroscopy Mass-spray mass spectroscopy, NMR, Raman. Laplace inversion Flash photolysis (Pulse5 and Pulse5QT)

Anyone We Know?
When you're driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, you are looking at a post turtle. You know that
  • he didn't get there by himself he doesn't belong there he can't get anything done while he's up there
and you just want to help the poor thing get down before he hurts himself. posted by Sandy Beach® © ™ at 4:07 AM 1 Sniveling From Whiners

When Words Come Back To Bite
In wartime, anyone who doesn't support the president is giving aid and comfort to the enemy, and is therefore a traitor. Here's a perfect example:
"Never has so much military and economic and diplomatic power been used so ineffectively, and if after all of this time, and all of this sacrifice, and all of this support, there is still no end in sight, then I say the time has come for the American people to turn to new leadership not tied to the mistakes and policies of the past."
This was clearly written by someone traitorous, someone who refused to support the President in a time of war. No doubt he was hoping for a defeat to the USA and a victory for the enemy.

GPG
The GNU Privacy Guard is a GPL'ed implementation of the new OpenPGP standard (RFC 2440). It is mostly interoperable with PGP 5.0, uses no patented or otherwise restricted algorithms, and can be used legally just about everywhere (except perhaps France where a lot of crypto is just plain outlawed). I'm following the development closely, submitting bug reports and suggestions. I'm hoping to see some extensions put in place that will make it easy to, for instance, keep my private key on an iButton or in my Pilot. My GPG public key is available here . Feel free to use it when you send me mail. Most of the files I make available for download are signed with it.
Mailcrypt + GPG
Mailcrypt is a package for Emacs that makes it easy to sign, encrypt, verify, and decrypt message in email or news. It removes all of the hassle from using encryption in your every day correspondence. Len Budney is the new maintainer of MailCrypt, having added support for PGP 5.0 in addition to the original PGP 2.6 . I've added support for GPG to MailCrypt. It's working pretty well, and is now part of the standard distribution. For the latest version, check out the
