Tuesday, November 15, 2005 On "Ethnomathematics": Math Is Not a Neutral Train Runnin' On "Ethnomathematics": Math Is Not a Neutral Train Runnin' Back in the late 60's I began to rethink the way I taught math and the content of the math I was teaching. I was a young man still in my 20's and I was moved to do this because: (1) In the 60's I was teaching youngfolk who graduated from NYC hi schools crippled with math miseducation and were not getting the math I was literally dropping on them (as was done to me- but by chance and specific kinds of socialization at Lincoln U. in PA -I "got it"). Our students believed that Whitefolks did math (the Asian math whiz myth was not developed yet) because they were genetically "capable" and we were not. This was the racial inferiority complex and racist assumptions that defined a Black person's education life. For example, at Queens College where I taught math in the SEEK Program from 1968-69, there was a white math prof in the math dept. who gave an interview to the campus newspaper saying that Blacks don't have the mental capacity to do math... and if they do, it's because they have some "white blood" in them. (2) Because of my deeply involved revolutionary political activism (Panther Party/Black Arts Movement/Black Studies Movement) and from the teachings of folk like John Henrik Clake and Dr. Ben, the growing knowledge of the world of math before and beyond Europe... I began to rethink just what is mathematics and who does it and why?

We investigate these questions in various cultural contexts ranging from medieval southern Spain to indigenous Latin America to the islands of the Pacific. Many questions follow, including: How do people in different societies understand what we call "mathematics"? Is math universal? How is math learnt? In what ways do people use math to understand their world? What is the relationship between math and other aspects of people's lives? Number systems, geometry, game theory and fractals will be among the math topics considered. Note: the course will be divided into two parts. Students may elect to take the course for 2-3 credits and attend classes Mondays only, which will be anthropology-heavy days. You have to be a subscriber to the Journal to read it, however, so I found a different Ravitch article on the same subject for your reading "pleasure." "Ethnomathematics" is the theory that minority children will learn math best if they are taught about their culture's mathematic progression and heritage. For instance, Hispanic children will learn math best if they are taught about the Mayan number system (but not, of course, any math tied to Spain). Let me come right out and say it. I'm educating and raising my kids to be successful. I'm educating and raising them to be leaders. I'm educating them to have a full and satisfying life, doing whatever it is they want to do. And they'll be able to do this because they will have the knowledge and the tools to do whatever it is they want to do. Kids who learn math according to their ethnicity will not. As Ravitch says: Particularism is akin to cultural Lysenkoism, for it takes as its premise the spurious notion that cultural traits are inherited. It implies a dubious, dangerous form of cultural predestination. Children are taught that if their ancestors could do it, so could they. But what happens if a child is from a cultural group that made no significant contribution to science or mathematics? Must children find a culturally appropriate field in which to strive? How does a teacher find the right cultural buttons for children of mixed heritage? And how in the world will teachers use this technique when the children in their classes are drawn from many different cultures, as is usually the case? By the time that every culture gets its due, there may be no time left to teach the subject itself.
