The error between this approximate solution and the true solution is determined by the truncation error that is made by going from a differential operator to a difference operator. The term "truncation error" reflects the fact that a difference operator can be viewed as a finite part of the infinite Taylor series of the differential operator.

A finite difference is a mathematical expression of the form f x b f x a ). If a finite difference is divided by b a , one gets an expression similar to a differential quotient , except that it uses finite quantities instead of infinitesimal ones. The approximation of derivatives by finite differences plays a central role in finite difference method s for the numerical solution of partial differential equation s.

Only three forms are commonly considered: forward, backward and central differences.
A forward difference is an expression of the form
Delta f (x) = f(x + h) - f(x). , Depending on the application, the spacing h is held constant, or the limit h A backward difference arises when h h abla f (x) = f(x) - f(x-h). Finally, the central difference is the average of the forward and backward differences. It is given by delta f (x) = rac.

Only three forms are commonly considered: forward, backward and central differences.
A 'forward difference' is an expression of the form
    Delta_h[f](x) = f(x + h) - f(x). ,
Depending on the application, the spacing ''h'' is may be variable or held constant.
