General Interest :Fractals
Fractals are mathematical objects that typically have the following characteristics
  • a fine structure (detail on abitrarily small scales)
  • too irregular to be described in traditional geometrical language, both locally and globally
  • has some form of self-similarity, perhaps approximate or statistical
  • its "fractal dimension" is greater than its topological dimension
  • is defined in a very simple way, perhaps recursively. Fractals often are associated with natural objects, such as the branchings of a tree, or the tributaries of a stream. A great deal has been written about fractals, and there are several web sites that deal exclusively with fractals (see our list of images on the web). Subgroups:
    • CCL
      - The cubic connectedness locus (CCL) is a four-dimensional analog of the familiar Mandelbrot set.
    • Clouds
      - Cloud simulations using spectral synthesis.
    • Henon
      - The Henon map is a 2-dimensional generalization of the logistic equation.

    Note to Newbie Jack
We’re here in London now, Jack; will introduce ourselves as soon as hospital rules allow. Strange as it’ll seem to you, your mother was once a baby, too. Here’s what I wrote about her when she was a newbie. A few weeks ago my daughter Katy was born. She started out terribly; grey, streaked with blood, and with her umbilical cord wrapped around her neck. Central Vermont Hospital took care of all that very well and now she is less the worse for wear than I am. But she is helpless, incredibly helpless. It’s been a few years since I’ve had an infant to watch and I’d forgotten. She can’t hold her huge head up; she can’t use her hands; and her eyes discover the world piece by piece at random. No other mammal has babies nearly as helpless as ours. Even blind puppies walk to their first nursing.

Posted on 2008-03-04 14:30 I have added a new gallery , the first in quite a long time.During the past year I have been working on a two-hour animation film, which will be announced here soon.
This gallery is an experiment in using data generated in Ultrafractal as input to Povray . Calculations in Ultrafactal are exremely fast, but the raytracing possibilities are limited. Povray, on the other hand calculates very slowly, but has unlimited and fast raytracing. Combining the strong points of the two seemed the obvious thing to try out.

      LATEST IMAGES OF MY IMAGINATION
Fractals are graphic representations of mathematical equations. Without the aid of a computer to generate the graphics from the equations, these mathematical objects would remain invisible. Traditionally flame fractals have always been particularly beautiful because of their ethereal quality. But in recent times, with the advent of many new marvellous scripts, new previously unimagined forms are now available. Many of my images are actually collages of individual flame fractals. Most of these flames are made in Apophysis, though a few of the earliest ones were made in the Gimp using it's flame plugin. Therefore, all the elements that you see, for example, the trees, plants, stars, etc. are flame fractals. These are opened in my graphics programme and then arranged to make the final picture. On a rare occassion I may sharpen a flame if it is warranted, but I don't add any extra effects as I like their purity.

Del.icio.us Furl Number 857 February 28, 2008 by Phil Schewe Fractals Through Time In a new paper, Carlos Escudero of the Institute for Mathematics and Fundamental Physics in Madrid performs calculations of the dynamic scaling (how a surface changes in space and over time at several different scales) of growing structures, such as the kind of semiconductor films used in the microchip industry where, even under the most carefully controlled of conditions, rough (non-Euclidean) geometries can exist. He found that the moment-by-moment behavior of the surfaces are strongly effected by the fractal geometry. Escudero (34- 915616800, cel@imaff.cfmac.csic.es ) will soon be testing his theories with colleagues in several practical areas of research, including the growth of tumor-like tissues in plants and the growth of semiconductor films. Fractal Grower
Fractal Grower is Java software for growing Lindenmayer substitution (L-systems) fractals. In its default mode, the software displays an interface for simple L-Systems which can be modeled by paper folding. This interface is appropriate for teaching fractals to elementary and middle school students. The full L-System interface (selectable by menu) is more appropriate for high school and university students. An L-system is a formal grammar (a set of rules and symbols) most famously used to model the growth processes of plants. Changes to the library of preset parameters will quickly yield beautiful fractal images of such variety that it is unlikely that what you create has ever been seen before. By Joel Castellanos Department of Computer Science, University of New Mexico
The paper folding system is based on a lecture given by Heinz-Otto Peitgen of the CeVis Research Center at the University of Bremen, Germany.
