Advanced Physics Forums Lecture and Theory Topics Quantum Mechanics PDA View Full Version : What is proof of E=hf ? Qoph 2006 January 16th, 01:44 I have a few important questions. Firstly, I have been searching for an explanation for why E=hf (if it is indeed true). If anyone knows why, or where I can read up why E=hf, please let me know.
Secondly, what exactly is mass, anyway? I used to take it for granted. But now, I'd like to know a true definition. I know people will say it is an interchangeable quantity for energy, or that it is related to the local curvature of space. But these beliefs are too circular in their logic.
I have been thinking recently about what exactly a person would logically want to measure when it comes to matter. I would want to measure the probability per unit volume of a particle being in a certain location. I would use that as a measure and build on that for physics. It seems too arbitrary to me to start off with mass, when we don't know exactly what it is. (Though if one of you knows, let me know please.)
(I am aware of people dealing with probabilities in Quantum Mechanics, too.)

          How does general relativity work?
The theory of general relativity shows that time is not constant and if interstellat travel was possible and travelled at or faster than the speed of light, you would come back a few years older but time on Earth would be about 100 years in the future. How does this work? I always thought that time was constant. Contact

    Einstein's Cosmological Constant
    Introduction
    Einstein called the cosmological constant "the worst mistake of my career". He originally developed the constant to balance his field equation of General Relativity. If the universe were static and not inflationary or deflationary (as believed in his time) then gravity would need to be balanced out to negate the attractive forces of matter and energy. Otherwise, the universe would have no choice but to collapse in on itself. There are reasons to believe that the cosmological constant is necessary in the study of Relativity. Today's current belief system put forth by Edwin Hubble states the universe is inflationary or expanding, and the overall shape of the universe is flat. However, the total matter and energy of the universe only adds up to 30% of the matter and energy needed to make the universe flat. The cosmological constant adds the extra 30% needed. adparams.getadspec('c_billboard1');

Let's Talk PHYSICS! - On SI units
I think there's a lot of history and interesting facts with regards to SI units and it will be a shame if we just study the chapter on measurement without reading some of these facts.
Fun Fact 1: There are only 6 base SI units instead of 7.
From year 3 or year 5 Physics lessons we would have know that there are 7 base SI units known as m, kg, s, K, mol, A, Cd. But Candela is strictly not a base unit as we can express it in terms of other SI units. The current definition for
The candela is the luminous intensity, in a given direction, of a source that emits monochromatic radiation of frequency 540 x 10^12 hertz and that has a radiant intensity in that direction of 1/683 watt per steradian. So Candela is expressed in terms of watt per steradian. Watt is the unit for Power and Power and that, as we know, can be expressed as kg m^2 s^-3 so it is not a base unit. What about steradian? What kind of unit is that? We shall come to that later.
Then why is it in the list of 7? Because of historical reasons which I shall explain later

The Importance of Positioning During Colonoscopy
Cynthia Edgelow, MSN, RN, CGRN; Ray Hucke, MPH, OT; Jim Prechel, GTS
As the nursing population continues to age, the focus on care of the healthcare provider in the workplace has become paramount. The challenge is how to provide optimal nursing care and yet maintain a focus on one’s own body. Ergonomics allow the allied health professional to optimize body functioning while assisting during endoscopy. Guidelines regarding general nursing care in endoscopy with a specific focus on effective body positioning during colonoscopy will be discussed. Endoscopy Procedures Colon cancer is the second leading cancer diagnosed in the United States today. The gold standard for diagnosis of colon cancer is the colonoscopy. Care in the endoscopy suite is typically provided by specially trained endoscopy nurses and technicians. The majority of patients being seen in an endoscopy department undergo moderate sedation. Because of the importance assigned to managing the patient who is receiving sedation and analgesia, a second nurse or associate is required to assist the physician with those procedures that are complicated either by the severity of the patient’s illness or the complex technical requirements associated with advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.6, 7

    Psychoanalysis at the crossroad
    Abstract

It is argued that psychoanalysis in the future can be sanctioned in academia, and find acceptance in the health business, only if metapsychological concepts become common knowledge. Psychoanalysis, and neighbouring branches, suffer from conceptual isolation. A knowledge of the unconscious belongs in public consciousness. Empirical research must be on firm theoretical ground, which is not the case today. For this reason, neither research nor a clinical approach can give direction to psychoanalysis. The answer lies in a theoretical perspective, a clarifying of metaphysical and metapsychological assumptions.
Keywords: dialectics, interiority, metapsychology, empiricism, physicalism, cognitive-behavioral
    Psychoanalysis and academia
    Dialectical foundation

Why is it that many psychoanalysts today are suspicious of 'scientific research'? The following is my explanation. In a nutshell, it is the 'exterior perspective' of scientific research that collides with a psychoanalytic 'perspective of interiority'.
At the kernel lies the theoretical foundation of research. A theory of metapsychological concepts is a prerequisite of research. Without it we have no means of understanding or interpreting the facts that we observe. Empirical results must be valued against an advanced theoretical backdrop, which is normative, and which also includes metaphysical assumptions. Such a theory will determine how the result shall be judged. In a sense, psychic phenomena aren't even observable if not viewed through the lens of theory.
