    Abstract
Strife proves hard to solve for K-theory. A branch of mathematics known as K-theory has this month seen its flagship journal bifurcate in a strange dispute, the details of which were still emerging as Nature went to press. The events centre on Anthony Bak, a mathematician at the University of Bielefeld in Germany and until recently managing editor of the Springer journal K-Theory To read this story in full you will need to login or make a payment (see right).

Jarah's K-theory refinements
Although Jarah Evslin is an anarchist, his talk at the postdoc journal club was extremely organized and useful. His topic was
  • What is K-theory bad for and what it does not classify?
We immediately figured out a couple of possible answers - such as the hamburgers, and so forth. However, Jarah started and everything suddenly made much more sense. Jarah is a very mathematically skillful guy, but nevertheless, category theory is too hardcore even for him. Nevertheless, he wanted to solve similar tasks as category theory and classify various conserved brane charges and fluxes, and outlined the following sequence of mathematical objects:
  • Embeddings Homotopy Homology K-homology S-covariant K-homology
These sets are increasingly refined. Everytime you fall one step lower, your space only classifies a subspace of the upper one, and moreover makes some identifications (quotienting). Therefore, every new entry in the list above is a set which is smaller "by two contributions" than the previous one, given a natural definition of "smaller". Actually, every new entry is not quite obtained as a quotient of the subset of the previous one because it can "twist" the previous entry so that Z_2 cubed is replaced by Z_8, as an example below will indicate. Also, every new entry is "more conserved" - its charges (elements) are invariant under a broader class of physical processes than the elements of the previous classifying set.

K-Theory http://www.kluweronline.com/issn/0920-3036/contents K-Theory is devoted to developments in the mathematical sciences which are related to one of the various aspects of K-Theory. It is open to all disciplines and one of its aims is to bring together work having close conceptual and methodological relationships which would be otherwise scattered throughout the literature. K-Theory publishes two kinds of articles: original research articles and research-survey articles. The latter are intended to provide nonspecialists with access to and insight into topics of current research and may include original work which alters existing accounts of the materials surveyed by, for example, introducing major simplifications or presenting new points of departure. Programme
    Participants
Organisers: S Lichtenbaum ( Brown ), VP Snaith ( Southampton
Theme: This workshop will concentrate on the aspects of the interplay between algebraic K-theory, arithmetic and algebraic geometry. Particular emphasis will be placed upon applications of the recently developed homotopy theory of geometric and motivic categories. In addition to lectures on current results, a number of expository lectures will be scheduled to provide researchers and graduate students in related areas with an opportunity to learn about these new techniques. Topics of current interest in this area include: Beilinson-Soulé conjectures, Bloch-Kato conjecture, Beilinson-Borel regulators, Kato-Parshin-Saito higher class field theory, Lichtenbaum-Quillen conjecture, Milnor K-theory, motivic cohomology, Brumer-Coates-Sinnott conjectures, polylogarithms and special values of L-functions. Participants will include: M Ando (UIUC), S Bloch (Chicago), D Burns (KCL), G Carlsson (Stanford), R de Jeu (Durham), WG Dwyer (Notre Dame), H Esnault (Essen), I Fesenko (Nottingham), P Goerss (Northwestern), JPC Greenlees (Sheffield), M Hanamura (Kyushu), L Hesselholt (MIT), M Hovey (Wesleyan), P Hu (Chicago), A Huber (Leipzig), U Jannsen (Regensburg), JF Jardine (UWO), B Kahn (Paris VII), I Kriz (Michigan), M Levine (Northeastern), S Lichtenbaum (Brown), I Madsen (Aarhus), M Mahowald (Northwestern), F Morel (Paris VII), DC Ravenel (Rochester), J Rognes (Oslo), M Rost (Ohio State), P Schneider (Muenster), AJ Scholl (Cambridge), S Schwede (Bielefeld), V Snaith (Southampton), C Soulé (IHES), NP Strickland (Sheffield), B Totaro (Cambridge), V Voevodsky (IAS), C Weibel (Rutgers), N Yagita (Ibaraki)
