Bierstedt, DMV; Susan Friedlander, Associate Secretary, AMS View Abstracts Conference Homepage A K-theory proof of the cobordism invariance of the index by Catarina Carvalho Radboud University Nijmegen It is a well-known fact that the Fredholm index of twisted signature operators on compact manifolds is invariant under cobordism. We give here a proof of cobordism invariance for the index of general elliptic pseudodifferential operators whose symbol classes satisfy a certain condition in K-theory. Our proof relies on properties of the push-forward map in K-theory. We consider embeddings of manifolds with boundary and show that the condition for cobordism invariance is preserved under push-forward, so that the problem can be reduced to R n This result holds also on noncompact manifolds, where here the operators are assumed to be multiplication outside a compact set. In particular, we extend the invariance of the index with respect to the push-forward map, and obtain as a by-product an extension of the K-theory index formula of Atiyah and Singer for these operators. Having a 50-foot stretch of one-lane road does not slow down traffic as long as the flow of traffic is less than one car per 50 feet of road. But if all traffic merges miles in advance, 1 car/50 ft. of road is enough to cause backup. Merging late maximizes the use of available road, which alleviates bottlenecks. Mitchener (Submitted on 14 Nov 2007) Abstract: In this article we use existing machinery to define connective $K$-theory spectra associated to topological ringoids. Algebraic $K$-theory of discrete ringoids, and the analytic $K$-theory of Banach categories are obtained as special cases. As an application, we show how the analytic assembly maps featuring in the Novikov and Baum-Connes conjectures can be factorised into composites of assembly maps resembling those appearing in algebraic $K$-theory and maps coming from completions of certain topological ringoids into Banach categories. These factorisations are proved by using existing characterisations of assembly maps along with our unified picture of algebraic and analytic $K$-theory. Subjects: K-Theory and Homology (math.KT)
