Mathematics education
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Mathematics education is a term that refers both to the practice of teaching and learning mathematics , as well as to a field of scholarly research on this practice. Researchers in math education are in the first instance concerned with the tools, methods and approaches that facilitate practice and/or the study of practice. However mathematics education research , known on the continent of Europe as the didactics of mathematics has developed into a fully fledged field of study, with its own characteristic concepts, theories, methods, national and international organizations, conferences and literature. This article describes some of the history, influences and recent controversies concerning math education as a practice. A mathematics lecture at Helsinki University of Technology.

Font Font Mathematics education needs an improved strategy for developing students' quantitative skills in order to prepare them for daily interaction in today's society.
In order for students to become quantitatively fit for our society, their teachers must obtain more knowledge of the subject material. Many math teachers at the elementary level do not have degrees in the area, and this lack of knowledge can cause major concerns in the development of students' quantitative skills. It is also possible that teachers may not fully understand the meaning behind certain concepts, which can ultimately contribute to uncertainty and a lack of developed mathematical reasoning. Changing the teacher's knowledge of the material will give students the opportunity to enhance their understanding of mathematical concepts and quantitative skills. In

Mathematics Education
Widespread efforts are needed to improve mathematics education. It is important that mathematics teachers receive a quality education and that successful teaching methods are applied in the classroom. There are several subjective views among students, teachers, parents, decision-makers, educators, and mathematicians that contribute to the shape of mathematics education. Therefore, it is essential to seek objective knowledge about the difficulties of the subject and also the reactions of students towards the subject. Links:

As models of the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) in the discipline of mathematics, these snapshots demonstrate the value of situating a project within the literature and the importance of presenting and interpreting student work as evidence. In the case of the newly designed program for a doctorate in applied mathematics at USC, the lack of evidence beyond student and faculty testimonials is readily conceded as a weakness.

View Site Curtis Bennett of Loyola Marymount University created this course portfolio to share his work with prospective secondary mathematics teachers. He wanted to create a document that he could pass on to other educators who might teach similar courses. The portfolio includes many aspects of the coursesyllabus, student descriptions, assignments, history of the course, etc.but focuses on his investigation of student learning. He was particularly curious about whether the research project helped students think more mathematically. This portfolio was developed as part of his fellowship with the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in 2000.
