Petrographic microscope image of a fiber of linen partly colored by excimer laser irradiation. Ultraviolet excimer laser photons lasting 30 ns cause strain in the cellulose of the linen comparable to as much as 2000 years of natural radiation. This strain changes the birefringence of the crystalline structure of the cellulose, and we observe the effect with a polarizing microscope. Science, Optics and You is a science curriculum package being developed for teachers, students, and parents. These activities are designed to promote the asking and answering of questions related to light, color, and optics. The program begins with basic information about lenses, shadows, prisms, and color, leading up to the use of sophisticated instruments scientists use to help them understand the world. The goal of Science, Optics and You is for students to acquire the skills with which they can do microscopic analysis of a variety of samples in multiple ways. Use the links below to navigate to featured subsections of this Website. Timeline in Optics - A summary of important events in optics, microscopy, astronomy, and the physics of light and color. Spanning from prehistory to the beginning of the twenty-first century, the timeline places each discovery, invention, theory, and development into a larger context of the world and its history. Find out when Halley's comet was first observed, how Christopher Columbus caused the moon to go dark, and who really invented the light bulb. Pioneers in Optics - Since the early days in Alexandria when Euclid described the laws of reflection in Optica , the science of optics has fascinated and challenged society's most brilliant minds. Some have made it possible to reach for the stars, while others have helped unveil a microscopic realm on Earth. Tribute is paid to these heroes through brief biographies that acknowledge their tremendous accomplishments and how they have affected civilization.

24. Fiber Optic Cable Tutorial
In recent years it has become apparent that fiberoptics are steadily replacing copper wire as an appropriate means of communication signal transmission.
http://www.arcelect.com/fibercable.htm
FIBER OPTICS THE BASICS OF FIBER OPTIC CABLE a Tutorial
BRIEF OVER VIEW OF FIBER OPTIC CABLE ADVANTAGES OVER COPPER:
SPEED: Fiber optic networks operate at high speeds - up into the gigabits
BANDWIDTH: large carrying capacity
DISTANCE: Signals can be transmitted further without needing to be "refreshed" or strengthened.
RESISTANCE: Greater resistance to electromagnetic noise such as radios, motors or other nearby cables.
MAINTENANCE: Fiber optic cables costs much less to maintain.
In recent years it has become apparent that fiber-optics are steadily replacing copper wire as an appropriate means of communication signal transmission. They span the long distances between local phone systems as well as providing the backbone for many network systems. Other system users include cable television services, university campuses, office buildings, industrial plants, and electric utility companies. A fiber-optic system is similar to the copper wire system that fiber-optics is replacing. The difference is that fiber-optics use light pulses to transmit information down fiber lines instead of using electronic pulses to transmit information down copper lines. Looking at the components in a fiber-optic chain will give a better understanding of how the system works in conjunction with wire based systems. At one end of the system is a transmitter. This is the place of origin for information coming on to fiber-optic lines. The transmitter accepts coded electronic pulse information coming from copper wire. It then processes and translates that information into equivalently coded light pulses. A light-emitting diode (LED) or an injection-laser diode (ILD) can be used for generating the light pulses. Using a lens, the light pulses are funneled into the fiber-optic medium where they transmit themselves down the line.

Graphic by: Yiqi Shao Rainbows, sunsets and halos; a spectacular display of colors and visuals in the sky called "atmospheric optics". As sunlight (or moonlight) enters the atmosphere, it is either absorbed, reflected, scattered, refracted or diffracted by atmospheric particles or air molecules. These processes, individually or in combination, are responsible for producing most optical effects. This module investigates these particle-light interactions and the assortment of optical effects they produce. The Light and Optics module has been organized into the following sections: Sections

Birding Optics
Michael and Diane Porter are avid birdwatchers. They've been reviewing binoculars and spotting scopes since 1993. See their article on the "Ten Myths of Birding Optics" in the September, 2006 issue of Bird Watcher's Digest. They've surveyed hundreds of binoculars and scopes, testing them for optical qualities and noting the fit-and-feel characteristics of each instrument. In each survey, a team of Iowa birders helped by trying out the optics and contributing their considered opinions. Some of their articles and reviews are posted here.

Q: What's a multi-mode fiber?
A : Multi-mode fibers have larger cores (about 2.5 x 10.3 inches or 62.5 microns in diameter) than single-mode fibers and transmit infrared light (wavelength = 850 to 1,300 nm) from light-emitting diodes (LEDs). You hear about fiber-optic cables whenever people talk about the telephone system , the cable TV system or the Internet. Fiber-optic lines are strands of optically pure glass as thin as a human hair that carry digital information over long distances. They are also used in medical imaging and mechanical engineering inspection.
