    Notes on the Quantum Mechanic approach to understanding Consciousness
    by Ulysses Castillo, PhD.
    (C) 2007 Spirit and Science
    Contemporary Physics offers a description of reality which is very different from what we are used to experience in our everyday life. In our everyday life we experience what in Physics is called macroscopic level physical laws, but at the microscopic (subatomic) level the physical reality is very different, even weird. Examples of this strangeness are the dual behavior (wave-particle) that exists in all physical matter. The relation of indetermination (uncertainty) between energy and time which in some cases seems to break the law of conservation of energy and the normal causality, making cause and effect switch their roles as it is demonstrated in the Delayed Choice Experiments. Quantum Entanglement and non-local effects which allows for the seemingly instantaneous exchange of state information between particles separated at great distances practically infinite. The possibility of interaction of particles with the vacuum as if physical emptiness actually had some energy (zero level energy). The description of vacuum as filled of anti-particles and the perfectly reversible particle interactions where particles traveling towards the future are identical to anti-particles traveling towards the past, and the list goes on and on. These strange effects are real and have been verified in many experiments. Some of them can be considered classical experiments, like Black Body Radiation, Photoelectric Effect, Atomic Spectroscopy and Electron Diffraction. Others are specific quantum effects, like the Tunnel Effect with its application in Quantum Computing, the Casimir Effect (commonly called a force from nothing), and the quantum Zeno effect (where an unstable particle, if observed continuously, will never decay). And even in some contemporary experiments, like the non-locality experiments of Alain Aspect, based on John Bell's Theorem.

    Planck's Hypothesis
    Near the end of the nineteenth century, the electromagnetic wave theory of light predicted that objects would emit radiation, but it did not accurately predict the observed spectrum of radiation from hot objects "black body radiation". Several attempts at reconciling the theory with experimental evidence failed until Max Planck proposed, in 1900, that vibrating atoms that emit light do so in discrete amounts. That is, energy was postulated to be quantized. Another experiment which provides compelling proof for the photon nature of light is the photoelectric effect. Light with a certain frequency was shone at a metal plate, and it was found that electrons were ejected. These electrons are then accelerated to a nearby plate by an external potential difference, and thus photoelectric current is established. Einstein extended Planck’s theory to say that light may be transmitted as tiny packets called photons, each with the energy of hf Planck’s constant:
    E = hf

    h = Planck’s constant which is 6.62618 x 10

    Background
    As a brilliant young scientist, Jessie Taylor had it all. She finished first in her graduating class from Paragon City University with a degree in Physics, married her high school sweetheart, another brilliant scientist in his own right, John Stevens, and was about to settle down and start a family, all before hitting her 21st birthday.
    Then disaster struck.
    One night, Jessie was helping her husband with their latest radical experiment that was to revolutionize space flight by altering the gravitational fields inside and around a shuttle which would, in turn, make them able to achieve great speeds during flight.
    During the experiment, there was an overload and one of the generators exploded while her husband was attempting to shut it down, killing him instantly, and emmitting a strong energy wave which engulfed Jessie. This energy wave seemed to give Jessie the power to actually control all gravitational fields around her.
    Now she uses her gifts to fight for justice...

    http://www.dynamictao.com/sciences/quantum_theory.html
    The Tao Te Ching and Quantum Theory Our work started as a simple attempt to translate the Tao Te Ching into English. In order to have a systematic approach, we searched for the basic principles of Tao philosophy. We did not expect any connection with modern science. By careful analysis, the mysteries of Tao revealed themselves, one at a time, and led us to an astonishing conclusion. Tao principles appeared naturally from the Tao Te Ching. We were led by the words of Laotzu, with no intent to mystify or de-mystify Tao. At the end, we were totally surprised by the scientific approach taken by Laotzu ...
    Chinese scholars have long debated the Tao. As a result, various Tao concepts have permeated into all Chinese philosophical thoughts and Tao became the root of many schools of Chinese philosophy. For unknown reasons, each school speculated on certain aspects of Tao and left other parts as mysteries. These mysteries became the source of fascination about Tao; the Tao Te Ching became the mysterious and self-contradictory philosophical text.
    We initially hesitated to adopt quantum field theory for our discussion, since this is a rather unorthodox approach for Tao. We later realized that Laotzu had already formulated his original Tao philosophy as a field theory! He described the interactions between man and heaven in terms of Chi exchange. With the properties of Chi, his field model shared a common basis with other field theories, such as the quantum field theory.

    Why nobody understands quantum theory
    by Sheilla Jones Quantum theory can accurately be described as the most successful theory of modern science. It spawned the technological marvels we now take very much for granted, from nuclear power to DVD players to magnetic resonance imaging. Yet behind all this progress lurks a dark shadow because there is no rational, sensible explanation for why the quantum world behaves as it does. The microscopic and macroscopic worlds operate with very different sets of rules, but the physics community has never been able to reconcile the quantum world with the everyday world. So why, in eight decades, have all the smart women and all the smart men who labour mightily in physics failed to come up with a theory that incorporates the quantum world into our best understanding of how our world works? The answer, I will argue, rests in the culture of the physics community at the time quantum theory was first developed. I should, at this point, differentiate between quantum theory and quantum mechanics. Physicists use the terms interchangeably, but for the sake of clarity I will impose the following distinction. Quantum mechanics describes how the quantum world works and is very well understood by its practitioners; quantum theory describes

    http://www.shomepower.com/dict/q/quantum_theory.htm
    Quantum Theory Modern physical theory that holds that Energy and some other physical properties often exist in tiny, discrete amounts. The older theories of classical physics assumed that these properties could vary continuously. Quantum theory and the theory of Relativity together form the theoretical basis of modern physics. The first contribution to Quantum Theory was the explanation of Blackbody Radiation in 1900 by Planck, Max , who proposed that the energies of any harmonic oscillator are restricted to certain values, each of which is an integral multiple of a basic minimum value. The energy of this basic quantum is directly proportional to the Frequency of the oscillator and is equal to the frequency times Planck's Constant . In 1905 Albert Einstein , in order to explain the Photoelectric Effect , proposed that radiation itself is also quantized and consists of Light quanta, or Photon(s) , that behave like particles. Bohr, Niels used the quantum theory in 1913 to explain both atomic structure and atomic spectra. The light or other radiation emitted and absorbed by Atom s is found to have only certain frequencies (or Wavelength ), which correspond to the absorption or emission lines seen in atomic spectra (see

    Last night I slipped through time
    To a parallel dimension
    You were alive and happy
    Our children played in trees
    Were strong and wise
    And knew no fear
    We watched them play together
    Somewhere everyone is happy
    Somewhere fish do not have bones Somewhere gravity cannot reach us anymore Somewhere you are not alone This morning, when I awoke God was dead but I lived on I cannot move But I am free I found the source of gravity Somewhere everyone is happy Somewhere fish do not have bones Somewhere gravity cannot reach us anymore Somewhere you are not alone Somewhere in a parallel dimension Happening now but not within your sight The force that binds the universe together Everything is gonna be alright Everything is gonna be alright Everything is gonna be alright Everything is gonna be alright Everything is gonna be alright Everything is gonna be alright Everything is gonna be alright Everything is gonna be alright Add new lyrics!!!

    Last weekend, I was really fed up with snow and literally jumped on the next plane to somewhere. Somewhere turned out to be LA, and if I had looked at a calendar in advance, I probably wouldn't have chosen the week between President's day and the Oscars.
    Anyway, my hotel reservations were messed up in every place that I had booked (even though I had already payed for), and after some random walk I ended up staying in a really weird place at the Ocean Front Walk in Venice Beach. The whole room was painted in dark blue, furniture all in chrome, and all from IKEA (with the tags still on). Even the bedsheets were IKEA (I have the same). There was no toilet paper, but a huge flat-screen on the wall. There was no heating, but a fridge large enough to store a whole cow. There was no hair dryer, but a high speed WLAN. There was no key, but a touch pad. I never saw anybody who worked at that place. I just called a number and the guy said: go to room 17, code is 1717 (I was very tempted to try next door with 1818).

    Quantum Theory and the Schism in Physics (From the Postscript to the Logic of Scientific Discovery) "Today, physics is in a crisis. Physical theory is unbelievably successful; it constantly produces new problems, and it solves the old ones as well as the new ones. And part of the present crisis – the almost permanent revolution of its fundamental theories – is, in my opinion, a normal state of any mature science. But there is also another aspect of the present crisis: it is also a crisis of understanding.” Karl Popper, from the Preface (1982) Quantum Theory and the Schism in Physics Postscript to the Logic of Scientific Discovery.
