Real analysis
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Real analysis is a branch of mathematical analysis dealing with the set of real numbers . In particular, it deals with the analytic properties of real functions and sequences , including convergence and limits of sequences of real numbers, the calculus of the real numbers, and continuity smoothness and related properties of real-valued functions.

edit Scope
Real analysis is an area of analysis, which studies concepts such as sequences and their limits, continuity, differentiation integration and sequences of functions. However, the scope of real analysis is restricted to the real numbers , and this defines the range of tools available. Real analysis is closely related to complex analysis , which studies broadly the same properties of complex numbers . In complex analysis, it is natural to define differentiation via holomorphic functions , which have a number of useful properties, such as repeated differentiability, expressability as power series , and satisfying the Cauchy integral formula However, in real analysis, it is usually more natural to consider

Stetson University Real analysis is a large field of mathematics based on the properties of the real numbers and the ideas of sets, functions, and limits. It is the theory behind calculus, differential equations, and probability, and it is more. A study of real analysis allows for an appreciation of the many interconnections with other mathematical areas. A slightly more complex description is given by Steve Zelditch at Johns Hopkins University Real Analysis is an enormous field with applications to many areas of mathematics. Roughly speaking, it has applications to any setting where one integrates functions, ranging from harmonic analysis on Euclidean space to partial differential equations on manifolds, from representation theory to number theory, from probability theory to integral geometry, from ergodic theory to quantum mechanics.

Jump to: navigation search Real analysis is a field in mathematics that focuses on the set of real numbers , their properties, sequences and functions . Included in this branch of mathematics is concepts of limits and convergence calculus , and properties of real-vaalued functions such as continuity The first serious consideration of the real numbers was by Archimedes and followed by other Greeks such as Euclid Pappus , and Zeno . To honor Archimedes' contribution, real analysts have named a property of the real numbers the Archimedean property . Real analysis remained in geometry 's shadow until the development of the subfield of calculus . This subject coordinatized all geometry known at the time, subsuming it into its scope. The foundations of real analysis were shaken at the end of the 19th century with the work of Dedekind . His Dedekind cuts questioned the continuity of the real line, by cutting at gaps between points. However, when it became apparent that his techniques used the dubious Axiom of Choice , his concerns were dismissed by real analysts as non-elementary Retrieved from " http://www.conservapedia.com/Real_analysis

    Real analysis
Real analysis is that branch of mathematical analysis dealing with the set of real numbers and functions of real numbers. It can be seen as a rigorous version of calculus and studies concepts such as sequences and their limits continuity differentiation integration and sequences of functions. The presentation of real analysis in advanced texts usually starts with simple proofs in elementary set theory , a clean definition of the concept of function, and an introduction to the natural numbers and the important proof technique of mathematical induction Then the real numbers are either introduced axiomatically, or they are constructed from sequences of rational numbers . Initial consequences are derived, most importantly the properties of the absolute value such as the triangle inequality and the Bernoulli inequality The concept of convergence , central to analysis, is introduced via limits of sequences. Several laws governing the limiting process can be derived, and several limits can be computed. Infinite series , which are special sequences, are also studied at this point.

The goal of the department of real analysis is to give rigorous backing to the machinery of calculus and the real number system. By the end of this course, a student should know the real numbers like the back of their hand, and be more than ready to learn the generalizations of topology.
