Signature (universal algebra)
Jump to: navigation search In mathematics , a signature for an algebraic structure A over an underlying set S is a list of the operations that characterize A , along with their arities . Signatures are a key concept in universal algebra , and are also employed in model category , and type theory S , followed by the symbols for the operations characterizing A . An operation f of arity n , where n is a natural number , is a function f S n S . Distinguished members of S , such as identity elements , are treated as operations of arity 0. The arities make up the second list, called the type of A . The arities are listed in the same order as the corresponding operations. To list the operations defining A in declining order of arity is conventional but not required. The signature of an algebraic structure captures much of its essential nature apart from its axioms Example: an additive group over G G To allow for external operations , one considers structures whose universe is a union of several "sorts". (For example, a vector space may be conceived of as a 2-sorted algebra, with the two sorts "scalar" and "vector".) For each operation one has to prescribe which sorts are allowed as inputs, and which sort the output belongs to.

A confusion here is that our analogy is comparing things from different
levels. Algebra is usually thought of as a model, so it comes above
logic in "reality". In our analogy, we are comparing it to logic, which
is fine as it's only an analogy. But I don't think the analogy extends
to having a completeness theorem for algebra. Paul. Sponsored Links Free braindumps Software forum Database administration forum

That is correct. This is, however, not my personal definition
of function, but the most common definition in mathematics.
In mathematics, the term "sequence" already has another
meaning, and "list" is rarely used in that sense. The
mathematical term might be "tuple".
That is only one possibility to define functions of multiple
arguments, and it would not be the way that I prefer.
I'd rather prefer a definition as genuine multi-argument
functions, i.e.,
So that the type of the function "single-argument" or "multi-argument" is part of the function itself, not of its interpretation. For the same reason, I prefer not to define a triple ( a, b, c ) as the pair (( a, b ), c ), but as a distinct entity, and I do not like to define a pair as a set: the following assertion is true: - "(a, b, c)" is a pair.

Digital filter

In electronics, a digital filter is any electronic filter that works by performing digital mathematical operations on an intermediate form of a signal. This is in contrast to older analog filters which work entirely in the analog realm and must rely on physical networks of electronic components (such as resistors, capacitors, transistors, etc.

We feel that this context has now changed. For a long time, "mathematics" and "computer science" have designated widely separated disciplines, overlapping only in areas which were considered "fringe" on either side. This was not really a historical view since Von Neumann, Turing and others were mathematicians who set off into the world of computers. We are now entering a time of reconvergence which has all kinds of implications. A prominent one is the increasing reality of computer proof verification as applied to standard mathematical work. This has been under development for quite a while, but just now it is becoming realistic to imagine applying it to a wide array of mathematical situations.
The idea is to write mathematical documents in a language such that the mathematical accuracy is then verified by a computer program. This should be compared with other different but related utilization of the computer:
