Wavelets in Computer Graphics
Multiresolution techniques and the use of hierarchy have a long history in computer graphics. Most recently these approaches have received a significant boost and increased interest through the introduction of the mathematical framework of wavelets . With their roots in signal processing and harmonic analysis, wavelets have lead to a number of efficient and easy to implement algorithms. Wavelets have already had a major impact in several areas of computer graphics:
  • Image Compression and Processing: some of the most powerful compression techniques for still and moving images are based on wavelet transforms;
  • Global Illumination: wavelet radiosity and radiance algorithms are asymptotically faster than other finite element techniques;
  • Hierarchical Modeling: using multiresolution representations for curves and surfaces accelerates and simplifies many common editing tasks;
  • Animation: the large constrained optimization tasks which arise in physically based modeling and animation subject to goal constraints can be solved faster and more robustly with wavelets;
  • Volume Rendering and Processing: wavelets can greatly facilitate dealing with huge data sets since they can be used for compression as well as feature detection and enhancement;

WaveLab is a collection of Matlab functions that have been used by the authors and collaborators to implement a variety of algorithms related to wavelet analysis. A partial list of the techniques made available:
  • orthogonal and biorthogonal wavelet transforms,
  • translation-invariant wavelets,
  • interpolating wavelet transforms,
  • cosine packets,
  • wavelet packets,
  • matching pursuit,
and a lot more; Here is a more detailed introduction.
Philosophywhy do it? WaveLab implements the concept of reproducible research. The idea is: An article about computational science in a scientific publication is not the scholarship itself, it is merely advertising of the scholarship. The actual scholarship is the complete software development environment and the complete set of instructions which generated the figures. We make WaveLab available to make the full content of our scholarship available, enabling others to understand and reproduce our work. Wavelab

Introduction
Uncompressed multimedia (graphics, audio and video) data requires considerable storage capacity and transmission bandwidth. Despite rapid progress in mass-storage density, processor speeds, and digital communication system performance, demand for data storage capacity and data-transmission bandwidth continues to outstrip the capabilities of available technologies. The recent growth of data intensive multimedia-based web applications have not only sustained the need for more efficient ways to encode signals and images but have made compression of such signals central to storage and communication technology. For still image compression, the `Joint Photographic Experts Group' or JPEG[ ] standard has been established by ISO (International Standards Organization) and IEC (International Electro-Technical Commission). The performance of these coders generally degrades at low bit-rates mainly because of the underlying block-based Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT)[ ] scheme. More recently, the wavelet transform has emerged as a cutting edge technology, within the field of image compression. Wavelet-based coding[

A sample of the FRG research problems:
  • Definition: A subset is said to be a wavelet set for an expansive integral matrix if the inverse Fourier transform of is a wavelet, i.e., if the double indexed family , is an orthonormal basis for . (This is equivalent to tiling both under the translations and the scalings Problem A: Wavelet set implementation. Because of the structure of wavelet sets, their explicit constructions, and the potential usefulness of dealing with only one wavelet in higher dimensions, there are two immediate and natural problems. We wish to develop recursive programmable schemes for applications, cf. [BT93, Stro00a, Wic94], as well as a theoretical formulation in terms of frames, cf. [HL00, Han97]. This latter approach would sacrifice orthonormality, which is often not a sacrifice in applications dealing with noise reduction and stable representation. On the other hand, the frame theoretic approach would reduce the recursive complexity, it would add smoothness in the spectral domain, and it would provide an iterative method of signal reconstruction. Related to this whole issue is the necessity of a critical comparison of the geometrical constructions in [BS01] and the theoretical but constructive approach in [BMM99] in terms of multiplicity functions and finite von Neumann algebras.

This ION Script application demonstrates the use of the continuous wavelet transform for time series analysis. Similar to the windowed Fourier transform, the wavelet transform decomposes a one-dimensional time series into two-dimensional time-frequency space.
The application is written in ION Script , while the wavelet transform is computed using the IDL Wavelet Toolkit . Further information on wavelet analysis can be found in the Practical Guide to Wavelet Analysis

http://www.gdal.org/frmt_ecw.html
ECW ERMapper Compress Wavelets (.ecw)
GDAL supports .ecw format for read access and write. The current implementation reads any number of bands but returns only as eight bit image data. Coordinate system and georeferencing transformations are read, but in some cases coordinate systems may not translate. Support for the ECW driver in GDAL is optional, and requires linking in external ECW SDK libraries provided by ERMapper. By default the ECW SDK will use up to one quarter of physical RAM for internal caching and work memory during decoding. This is normally fine, but the amount of memory to use can be adjusted by setting the GDAL_ECW_CACHE_MAXMEM configuration variable with an amount of memory in bytes. Config variables can be set in the environment or using the config commandline switch.
Creation Issues
The free ECW compression kit only supports compression of images up to 500MB. To compress very large images it is necessary to license ECW technology from ERMapper. Files to be compressed into ECW format must also be at least 128x128. Non-eight bit source data will be rescaled by the ECW SDK in some manner that I don't understand ... the resulting image is effectively eight bit. When writing coordinate system information to ECW files, many less common coordinate systems are not mapped properly. If you know the ERMapper name for the coordinate system you can force it to be set at creation time with the PROJ and DATUM creation options.
