Links Active Noise control Led By Dr Roshun Paurobally, a team of engineers has developed an active noise control system for reducing the ambient noise levels in heavy earth moving vehicles. Supported by Alcoa, this research resulted in a successful demonstrator that significantly reduced the low-frequency noise levels experienced by crews of large vehicles used extensively in the resources sector. Working long shifts under adverse conditions, operators were finding that employees were becoming tired, were easily distracted and starting to make mistakes. As well as the obvious health concerns, operators were seeing increased accident / incidence rates and a drop off in productivity. The research team has developed a sophisticated, multi-channel active noise control system which provides a substantial reduction in the ambient noise levels in the target frequency range. Whilst active noise control is not new, most applications require the user to wear a headset. The innovative aspect here is that the users do not have to wear headsets, making its application in industrial environments much more appealing. The next step is to optimise the Digital Signal Processing (DSP) modules and cost reduce the current system to generate an economically-priced product. As well as having applications in multi-spectral, multi-channel environments, the research group is looking to adapt the technology to simpler, single-channel applications. As an example, a single channel system could be used to significantly reduce the ambient noise levels resulting from an air conditioning duct, swimming pool pump or similar.
