Our systems are used throughout the continuum of pharmaceutical discovery and development – from the early disease-discovery phase, through ADME-Tox research. For example, our electrochemical detectors are used to better understand disease targets and, in drug development, to determine the stability of a drug in different formulations. In pharmaceutical QC applications – where identification of contaminants, or a precise understanding of how and why a compound degrades, or an exact quantitation of active and inactive ingredients, can literally be a matter of life and death – manufacturers have previously had to rely on imprecise tools that can only illuminate part of the equation. No more. Our offerings set a new standard for quality-control applications.

      Overview
A branch of chemistry that deals with the development and use of techniques for chemical measurement. These techniques are used in analysing the chemical composition of substances. Chemical analysis may be qualitative or quantitative. Qualitative analysis involves attempting to identify what materials are present in a sample. Answering the question: ‘What is it?’. Quantitative analysis involves determining how much of a material is present in a sample. Answering the question: ‘How much is present?’.
The techniques of analytical chemistry are designed to test a sample of a substance for the characteristics of a particular element or compound. Some methods involve chemical reactions unique to a substance. Other techniques measure a substance's characteristic absorption or emission of light and other forms of electromagnetic radiation. Chemists use a technique called electroanalysis to observe the responses of a sample to electrical signals. Still another method, mass spectroscopy, enables researchers to identify compounds by measuring the mass of the different parts of a molecule.
Complex substances, such as body fluids and industrial chemicals, may be separated into their components before being analysed. Methods of separation include chromatography and extraction.

This Analytical Chemistry Introduction page provides resources and links on the Analytical field of Chemistry. Analytical Chemistry plays an important role in chemistry as well as in many other sciences.
This is best described by Joshua Lederberg (1958 Nobel Laureate, Medicine, 1989 Medal of Science): "The news of science usually concerns what results a scientist has achieved, not how he or she has found them. All too often, the role of instrumentation - from the tedious steps in design, to commercial production, to routine maintenance - is taken for granted. Yet scientific progress continues to depend on the invention and refinement of tools and techniques."

    Types
Analytical chemistry can be split into two main types, qualitative and quantitative:
    • Qualitative
Qualitative inorganic analysis seeks to establish the presence of a given element or inorganic compound in a sample. Qualitative organic analysis seeks to establish the presence of a given functional group or organic compound in a sample.
    • Quantitative
Quantitative analysis seeks to establish the amount of a given element or compound in a sample.
Most modern analytical chemistry is quantitative. Quantitative analysis can be further split into different areas of study. The material can be analyzed for the amount of an element, or for the amount of an element in a specific chemical species. The latter is of particular interest in biological systems; the molecules of life contain carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and others, in many complex structures. edit

There are many techniques available for the analysis of materials; however, they are all based on the material's interaction with

Pictures of the Future    Fall 2007
M aterials for the Environment – Analytical Chemistry Catching Contaminants Some Siemens products that contain electronic components are scrupulously analyzed in a special laboratory for traces of toxic substances such as lead or cadmium. The lab, which has expertise in chemistry and physics, not only helps to clear up mysterious product failures, but has also defined international test standards for environmental toxins. A fine beam of ions from a specialized mass spectrometer bores, layer by layer, through a sample—for instance a wafer (left)—analyzing its chemical composition. This ultra-sophisticated piece of equipment is controlled by computer (bottom) A bare and windowless corridor leads past a succession of dark doors. Behind these are labs where chemists and physicists from Siemens Corporate Technology (CT) in Munich track things that are barely tangible. They search for toxic substances in telephone casings and power cables, they unearth the causes of component failures, and they investigate why light switches in cars fail. Thanks to their ultra-expensive, ultra-sensitive collection of analytical equipment, the scientists are able to detect chemical and physical impurities diffusing through nanometer layers of computer chips—and even, if necessary, individual ions and molecules.

Analytical chemistry is the science that seeks ever improved means of measuring the chemical composition of natural and artificial materials. Chemical composition is the entire picture (composition) of the material at the chemical scale and includes geometric features such as molecular morphologies and distributions of species within a sample as well as single dimensional features such as percent composition and species identity.
