Register Home News First Bolivian Apiculture Congress First Bolivian Apiculture Congress Written by Greby Caillavy Tuesday, 28 November 2006 Participants inaugurate the First Bolivian Apiculture Congress For the past ten years, Bolivian apiculture has enjoyed significant growth thanks to an ideal climate and vast forested areas that are well suited to apiculture. Now is the time to change the economic potential of apiculture into a reality. This change is now occurring thanks to the initiative of ADAPICRUZ (Apiculture Association of the Eastern City of Santa Cruz). The Association, with a little money and a lot of hard work, brought together stakeholders from Bolivia, along with professionals from Argentina and Chile (who were extremely professional and open with their knowledge) for the first annual Bolivian Apiculture Congress. We discussed various technical themes at the Congress. Most notable was a lively discussion on the benefits of the hive, with a special focus on apitherapy. This discussion was complemented by Professor Nelson Rolandi Casali's presentation on different apitherapeutic recipes and their preparation.

FAO trade statistics show that Cameroon imports annually honey worth US$700,000 (€540,000). This does not reflect the amount of honey that is produced and consumed locally. Local communities in Cameroon have always harvested honey from the wild and many still do so. Honey is consumed as a beverage and is used in the preparation of many traditional medicines. This article highlights the role of beekeeping in biodiversity conservation and poverty alleviation in Cameroon. Bio-geographical profile of Cameroon
Cameroon is in Central Africa and has a population of 16 million, with a growth rate of about 3%. 70% of the population lives in rural areas and about 40% of the entire population lives below the poverty line of US$1 (€0.8) per day. Cameroon is endowed with diverse natural resources including forest and crude oil, yet it is a highly indebted country undergoing economic structural adjustments proposed by the World Bank and the IMF. Forestry contributes about 20% to Cameroon’s export revenue, second to crude oil. The 20 million hectares of dense tropical forest, which forms part of the Congo Basin, is of global conservation significance, having the highest number of plants per unit area in the region, and with the second highest mammal and bird species counts. Amongst her floristic regions of high biodiversity conservation value is the Cameroon Highlands, recognised as a global biodiversity hotspot with high anthropogenic pressure.

The practice is widespread: honeybees are kept in large cities and villages, on farms and rangelands, in forests and deserts, from the Arctic and Antarctic to the Equator. Subcommittee Reports I. Apiculture Keith S. Delaplane The number of managed bee hives in Georgia declined from 80,000 in 1994 to 70,000 in 1995 . This parallels a long-standing national trend toward declining hive numbers that began in 1947. However, overall honey production in Georgia, including the 1995 crop year, has stayed uniform over nine years . Thus, production efficiency is good. Parasitic tracheal mites and Varroa mites continue to kill colonies and cost beekeepers, large sums for control. Mites, coupled with chronically low honey prices, continue to take their toll on hive numbers and beekeeping businesses. Conditions in 1995 were good for honey production. Beekeepers with five or more hives harvested 4,340,000 pounds of honey, compared to 5,040,000 in 1994. Production per hive (62 pounds) was virtually unchanged from 1994 (63 pounds). Value of the 1995 crop was $2,995,000 compared to $2,873,000 in 1994. In 1995, average price per pound rose to 69 , compared to 57 in 1994 which may reflect an increasing price trend following declining world-wide honey reserves. No data are available for income from pollination rental fees, queens, or package bees.
