Natural Beekeeping: Organic Approaches to Modern Apiculture
Natural Beekeeping by Ross Conrad is a valuable guide for both beginners who are interested in selling quality honey and seasoned professional beekeepers who want to develop an integrated pest management approach. The author proposes a program of selective breeding and natural hive management to fight Varroa destructor , a mite, and other major bee pests. Topics covered are nontoxic methods of controlling pests, eliminating American foulbrood disease without antibiotics, breeding strategies, and a host of other tips and techniques for keeping hives healthy.
Natural Beekeeping begins with a Forward written by Gary Paul Nabhan, the director of the Center for Sustainable Environments. From his experience with the Forgotten Pollinators Campaign, he concisely outlines the current problems in the honeybee population of North America and prepares the reader for Ross Conrad’s environmentally friendly approach to solving these problems.

What is Apiculture?
Apiculture is the management and study of honeybees.
  • Apiculture is derived from the honeybee's Latin name Apis mellifera , meaning ‘honey gatherer’. Since bees do not collect honey but nectar from which honey is made, the scientific name should actually be Apis mellifica meaning ‘honey maker’. Although apiculture refers to the honeybee, the vital role all bees play in the pollination of crops and flowering plants has caused apiculture to also include the management and study of non-Apis bees such as bumblebees and leafcutter bees. Some 90 million years ago, flowering plants first appeared on earth. The wasp-like ancestors of bees took advantage of the food made available by flowers and began to modify their diet and physical characteristics. Since then, flowering plants and bees co-evolved. This eventually led to a complete interdependence, meaning that flowering plants and bees cannot live and reproduce without each other. The genus Apis is comprised of a comparatively small number of species including the western honeybee

Honey Bees are generally thought of merely as honey producers, however they play an extremely vital role in Ohio agriculture through pollination. They pollinate such crops as apples, cucumbers, melons and pumpkins along with seed crops such as sunflowers and canola. The apiary program, through a system of state and county inspectors, coordinates disease inspections to help insure a healthy beekeeping industry. Beekeepers are required to register their apiaries annually with the program so the colonies may be easily located and examined for various diseases and parasites.
The apiary program works closely with the USDA to properly identify any suspected problem prior to recommending a control procedure to the beekeeper. In 2006, as many parts of the country were experiencing the Africanized Honey Bee, Ohio was also testing aggressive colonies for any Africanized traits. There were no tested colonies showing positive Africanization.
