Based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the Conservancy also operates regional offices in Mississippi, Maryland, Ohio, and California. Every day, prehistoric and historic archaeological sites in the United States are lost forever along with the precious information they contain. Modern-day looters use backhoes and bulldozers to recover artifacts for the international market. Urban development and agricultural methods such as land leveling and topsoil mining destroy ancient sites. The Conservancy protects these sites by acquiring the land on which they rest, preserving them for posterity. American Archaeology , the Conservancy's quarterly magazine, showcases some of the nation's finest writers and photographers in a beautiful design, tailored for a layperson audience. Readers explore t he prehistoric world of North America's earliest inhabitants, the historic past of modern-day

67. The Archaeology Of Ancient Ireland
An illustrated introduction to Irish archaeology by Michael Sundermeier, of Creighton University, Oregon, US.
http://mockingbird.creighton.edu/english/micsun/IrishResources/archaeol.htm
The Archaeology of Ancient Ireland
Prehistoric Ireland. Little remains of Irish dwellings that predates the sixth century a.d. The abundance of wood and the difficulty of working stone with primitive tools undoubtedly accounts in part for this. In addition, the primitive farming practice of depleting the fields and then moving on to new ones made the laborious erection of a permanent stone dwelling unfeasible. Moreover, livestock constituted a major part of the wealth of the time, and the pasturing of flocks required considerable mobility, since the animals lived as foragers and were not, for the most part, fed grain from the laboriously worked fields. Furthermore, there were at that time no towns or even villages where artifacts might accumulate over a considerable period of time. At the most there were quasi-permanent encampments such as the royal sites of Cruachan and Emain Macha. Burial sites, however, are another matter. Court graves and passage graves can be found dating from as early 3,500 years b.c. (Harbison 5-ff). A court grave (or court tomb) was divided into two basic parts: a long chamber which contained smaller compartments in which remains were deposited, and a large open-space or court at the entrance to the chamber. The court was semi-circular and marked off by large standing stones. The chamber was roofed by a stone mound which tapered toward the back. Presumably the open court was used for rituals associated with burial.

New Stonehenge dig starts
Britain's prehistoric Stonehenge on Salisbury plain in Wiltshire is to be excavated for the first time in half a century. The purpose of this new dig is to attempt to shed more light on the standing stones. Specifically one aim is to date the arrival of the bluestones which were transported 250-kilometres from Preseli in Wales. The excavation started on Monday and archaeologists will spend two weeks on site. Labels: henge Preseli Salisbury Plain stonehenge ... wiltshire

Florida Museum of Natural History The Journal of Caribbean Archaeology is intended to provide a refereed publication outlet for archaeological research in the Caribbean and surrounding area. The development of our understanding of both the historic and prehistoric past in the Caribbean has been hampered by the lack of a journal devoted expressly to archaeology in the region, and archaeologists have resorted to publishing in a variety of venues. Many of these are not widely or readily available or are typically associated with another discipline. There is no journal devoted specifically to Caribbean archaeology, and it is this void that the Journal of Caribbean Archaeology seeks to fill.

2nd century Roman roundhouse found near Poulton in the UK
One of the most important archaeological finds for decades has been uncovered during a sewer improvement project in Poulton. The remains of a Roman roundhouse, thought to date back to the second century, have been discovered on grazing land close to the town. A team of 10 archaeologists is now working at the football pitch-sized site, painstakingly uncovering and documenting what remains of the Romano-British roundhouse which is around 10m in diameter. A small amount of black burnished ware pottery, thought to date from around the second century, has been found which has helped the experts to date the roundhouse. The remains of the house, which would have been a dwelling house, include an outside drainage gulley, holes for the timber support posts which would have been used, some cobbles and a storage pit. The archaeological team believe they have also discovered signs of a further roundhouse a few metres away, indicating this could have been the site of an early settlement.

Archaeology in Mesa Verde Country
The earliest inhabitants of the area were nomadic peoples who lived in the area from at least 10,000 B.C., sustaining themselves by hunting game and gathering food plants. The Ancestral Puebloans (Anasazi) occupied the area from approximately A.D. 1 to A.D. 1300 and left remarkable remnants of their civilization throughout the region.
