In their homeland in Central Asia, Turks lived in dome-like tents appropriate to their natural surroundings, and they were nomads . These tents later influenced Turkish architecture and ornamental arts At the time when the Seljuk Turks first came to Iran, they encountered an architecture based on old traditions. Integrating this with elements from their own traditions, the Seljuks produced new types of structures. The most important type of structure they formulated was the" medrese ". The first medresses Muslim government medresses in Nisabur, Tus and Baghdad and the Hargerd Medresse in Horasan. Another area in which the Seljuks contributed to architecture is that of tomb monuments. These can be divided into two types: vaults and big dome-like mausoleums. The Ribati- Serif and the Ribati Anasirvan are examples of surviving 12th century Seljuk caravanserais , where travelers would stop over for the night. In Seljuk buildings, brick was generally used, while the inner and outer walls were decorated in a material made by mixing marble, powder, lime and plaster. In typical buildings of the Anatolian Seljuk period, the major construction material was wood, laid horizontally except along windows and doors, where columns were considered more decorative.

Roman Architecture
Roman baths in Paris One of the things the Romans are most famous for is their architecture. The Romans brought a lot of new ideas to architecture , of which the three most important are the arch , the baked brick , and the use of cement and concrete.
Around 700 BC the Etruscans learned West Asian ideas about architecture, and they taught these ideas to the Romans. We don't have much Etruscan architecture left, but a lot of their underground tombs do survive, and some traces of their temples.
In the Republican period , the Romans built temples and basilicas , but also they made a lot of improvements to their city: aqueducts and roads and sewers . The Forum began to take shape. Outside of Rome, people began to build stone amphitheaters for gladiatorial games
The first Roman emperor, Augustus , made more changes: he built a lot of brick and marble buildings , including a big Altar of Peace and a big tomb for his family, and a big stone theater for plays. Augustus' stepson Tiberius rebuilt the Temple of Castor and Pollux in the Roman forum.

'Second Life': Don't worry, we can scale
That news title was posted on ZDNet News : Jun 6, 2006
"Last March, Cory Ondrejka, the chief technology officer at "Second Life" publisher Linden Lab, bet a symbolic quarter that his virtual world would within two years have more users than the wildly popular online game "World of Warcraft."
The bet was certainly ambitious . After all, "WoW," as fans call it, currently has more than 6.5 million users. " Second Life" has 240,000 registered users . But whether Linden Lab's virtual world can catch "WoW" isn't the most pressing question about the virtual world's future for some people familiar with its computer network. Their concern is more about technology: Can the computer network of "Second Life," using an unusual configuration that dedicates each server to a sliver of virtual real estate, scale with growing demand? Second Life" currently runs on 2,579 servers that use the dual-core Opteron chip produced by AMD. Each server is responsible for an individual "sim," or 16 acres of virtual "Second Life" land. At peak usage that means that each server is handling about three users...."

Richard Roberts - Hearing A Reality
Exploded Axonometric of his most recent electro-acoustic system
Architect Richard Roberts electro-acoustic systems have been developed to explore the sonic properties of environments, and reveal the way in which sound and space co-habit one another. The system uses speakers and panels of resonating metal and gains its input and mode of operation through the cyclical feedback of sound waves from the environment in which it is placed. It is extremely reactive and capable of changing in real-time to anything that alters the acoustic properties of the environment that it exists within.

Don't Let Architecture Astronauts Scare You
By Joel Spolsky
Saturday, April 21, 2001
When great thinkers think about problems, they start to see patterns. They look at the problem of people sending each other word-processor files, and then they look at the problem of people sending each other spreadsheets, and they realize that there's a general pattern: sending files. That's one level of abstraction already. Then they go up one more level: people send files, but web browsers also " send " requests for web pages. And when you think about it, calling a method on an object is like sending a message to an object! It's the same thing again! Those are all sending operations, so our clever thinker invents a new, higher, broader abstraction called messaging , but now it's getting really vague and nobody really knows what they're talking about any more. Blah.
