Invertebrates in the Plankton: Arthropoda The phylum Arthropoda encompasses a tremendous range of marine species and body plans, as well as an amazing diversity of terrestrial insects and spiders. Coastal and nearshore marine habitats, including the plankton, feature a number of these forms, such as copepods, crabs, and barnacles. While the mobile, highly jointed bodies of crabs and copepods may seem quite different from the sessile, immobile carapaces of barnacles, these groups share important traits: a chitinous exoskeleton and a need to molt that exoskeleton in order to grow larger. In our observations of the plankton, we found both larval and fully planktonic species to be very abundant: during our night-lighting from the Lab dock, we caught many hundreds of two crab larval stages, zoea and megalopae. And in our daytime plankton tow in the Straits area close to Friday Harbor, we caught great numbers of several different types of copepods. Photos of these and our other discoveries follow. Brachyuran Crabs This crab megalopa (4 mm in length) was one of hundreds captured by night-lighting during the last week of June. It swam strongly at the water's surface, its legs occasionally splaying energetically. This megalopa is the final larval stage of true crabs, preceding the benthic juvenile stage and following several zoeal stages. One of the most recognizable brachyurans (also known as true crabs) along the Pacific coast is the Dungeness crab (

Their body is covered with an exoskeleton and many arthropods have compound eyes. Arthropods are a highly successful group of animals. The Phylum Arthropoda is the largest of all animal phylums and accounts for over three quarters of all currently known living and fossil organisms. The exact number of living arthropod species is unknown since many have yet to be identified, especially those inhabiting tropical rainforests. ARTHROPODA
crustaceans insects centipedes millipedes , symphylans, pauropodans, and the extinct trilobites . Arthropods are characterized by a segmented body covered by a jointed external skeleton (exoskeleton), with paired jointed appendages on each segment; a complex nervous system with a dorsal brain, connective nerves passing around the anterior end of the digestive tract, and a ventral nerve cord with a ganglion in each body segment; an open circulatory system with a dorsal heart into which blood flows through paired openings (ostia); and a greatly reduced body cavity (coelom). Because the jointed exoskeleton blocks growth of the organism, it must be shed periodically. This phenomenon, called molting, or ecdysis, is a characteristic feature of the phylum; it permits rapid growth in size and significant change in body form until the new exoskeleton, secreted by the animal, has hardened. Arthropods are mainly terrestrial, but aquatic representatives are well known. There are three subphyla, comprising nine classes. Subphylum Trilobita Triarthrus eatoni was a fossil trilobite common in the Ordovician seas.

85% of all animals are arthropods.
Arthropods include insects, arachnids, crustaceans, millipedes, centipedes, and many other minor groups commonly referred to as "bugs".
Arthropods have many values to humans and the ecosystem, including pollinating flowers, decomposing dead animals and feces, controlling populations of "pest" species, providing food to other animals (and in some cases, food for humans), and being beautiful (such as butterflies).
Knowing more about arthropods helps insure that these valuable functions continue and help us to control the "pest" species, including those like mosquitoes and ticks that can transmit deadly human diseases.

Arthropods are the make up the largest group in terms of species and diversity. Arthropods are name for their jointed appendages. (Greek, arthro = joint, poda = feet). Some of the appendages are used for locomotion, food handling, taste, defense, touch, and reproduction. The exoskeleton of arthropods are made of chitin. Chitin is a tough flexible material which protects the soft body parts and prevent dehydration. Arthropods are divided into five major classes. Class Insecta are the most aboundant and diverse animals. Class Arachnida includes spiders, scorpions, mites and ticks. Class Crustacean includes crabs, lobster, barnacles, etc., . Classes Centipede and Millipede include centipede and millipede. mailto:sotsuka@nvcc.edu
