Artificial Intelligence
Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Artificial Intelligence (AI), a term that in its broadest sense would indicate the ability of an artifact to perform the same kinds of functions that characterize human thought. The possibility of developing some such artifact has intrigued human beings since ancient times. With the growth of modern science, the search for AI has taken two major directions: psychological and physiological research into the nature of human thought, and the technological development of increasingly sophisticated computing systems. In medicine, programs have been developed that analyze the disease symptoms, medical history, and laboratory test results of a patient, and then suggest a diagnosis to the physician. The diagnostic program is an example of so-called expert systems—programs designed to perform tasks in specialized areas as a human would. Expert systems take computers a step beyond straightforward programming, being based on a technique called rule-based inference, in which preestablished rule systems are used to process the data. Despite their sophistication, systems still do not approach the complexity of true intelligent thought.

Artificial Intelligence Data Think Tank robot Landru Artificial intelligence (or computer intelligence ) is a term coined by 20th century Human computer engineers to describe hardware and software sophisticated enough to reason independently, form new conclusions, and alter its own responses. At the time the term was coined, such programs were largely theoretical. The yardstick for determining whether a computer was operating an artificial intelligence was then the Turing test , first devised by early computer scientist Alan Turing in citation needed edit The android Data , built in the early 24th century , may be an example of a true artificial intelligence according to this definition. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the science of making machines intelligent, in order to interpret or react to human intelligence or environmental stimulus. Arguments continue as to whether machine intelligence is possible and as to whether the emergence of machine intelligence would resemble human intelligence.
    Edit section Turing Test
    An accepted method of testing AI is the Turing Test proposed by Alan Turing as "The Imitation Game"(1950). Used as a test for "intelligence" the Turing test requires a subject (person), an interogator (person) and an "intelligent machine". The object of the game is for the interrogator to use emperical questions to determine which of the other two is the person and which is the machine.

      While no consensual definition of Artificial Intelligence (AI) exists, AI is broadly characterized as the study of computations that allow for perception, reason and action. We can divide the cognitive world into 3 domains - Intelligent, Normal and Below Normal. The average human being does Normal things. Intelligence is always demonstrated in NEW domains. The properties of a New domain are that the patterns in these domains are ambiguous and are incomplete. Therefore, Intelligence can be better understood as the ability to work efficiently with Incomplete, Ambiguous Patterns. Artificial Intelligence extends the computing power from an algorithmic domain to this Incomplete, Ambiguous patterns domain. (Algorithms have the property of Definiteness which cannot be satisfied in this domain.)

    1. Introduction Hi. I wrote the article 'Game objects with C++', in Pixelate #8. Now, I'll try to explain how to write artificial intelligence (AI) in games. I must warn you: there are thousands of different allgorithms around AI. Here I'll explain the simplest and how to create AI systems by your own. I'll assume you did your "homework": a description of the game, initial graphics (at least a paper and pencil design) and a simple flow chart (only to have an idea of how the program will work). Why you must to do this? Because each game is different, and each one has different needs.
    So, with this "homework" you'll discover what are the way that AI must work. (Mmmm... I've read this in other article, haven't you? ;^) ). Note: About the examples; I must warn you that they are incomplete. If you want to use them in your programs you have to add several things, not only to the functions' code, but also some data. 2. AI basics: how the phantom can eat pac-mans.

    The added value of the Master's in Artificial Intelligence
    Artificial Intelligence involves the analysis and modelling of tasks that are commonly assumed to require human intelligence, as well as the design of systems capable of performing or supporting such tasks. As an Artificial Intelligence (AI) graduate you will possess knowledge, experience, and insights in areas such as knowledge acquisition and knowledge modelling. You will also have mastered methods for the design of AI-systems (such as knowledge-based systems), multi-agent systems, techniques for search and optimization (such as genetic algorithms and neural networks). This programme is a pioneer in the development of intelligent systems. As a Master's student, you will be given the opportunity to work on advanced information systems at a wide range of companies and institutions. Some recent examples include semantic navigation on overheid.nl (the main Dutch government website), a personal 'quit assistant' to help people give up smoking and, in partnership with Philips, adaptive personal music choices during sports training. Others have delved into new forms of online publication for Elsevier and a knowledge system to predict problems with Amsterdam's trams and other public transport.

    1. Goals of orgadoc
    OrgaDoc has been designed to easily copy and maitain a pool of documents between computers. You can synchronise your documents pool with rsync or unison. You don't need to install a database server (like MySql or PostgreSql), a HTTP server, a script language (like php, perl, ...). You only need orgadoc to generate html pages and to perform queries. OrgaDoc is easy to use : only the creation of some xml files describing your documents is needed. These files can be generated. Read the section (see section 4. How to use it ) for details. Up Top Contents [Index]
    2. Installation
    Needed software to compile orgadoc:
    • An eiffel compiler : SmartEiffel for example;
    • Gobo library (http://www.gobosoft.com).
    Needed software to run orgadoc_init_readmes:
    • pdfinfo which is a part of xpdf (pdfinfo is into the xpdf-utils package on Debian GNU/Linux).
    OrgaDoc uses the autoconf/automake facilities, therefore the end user should use the provided configure script (some options are available) to generate architecture specific. First of all, some environment variables have to be defined if your compiler and libraries are not located in the standard path. Here is a list of variables:
