23. Biennial Astrobiology Science Conference
Welcome to the second astrobiology Science Conference! astrobiology is a novel approach to the scientific study of the living universe.
http://web99.arc.nasa.gov/abscon2/
Welcome to the second Astrobiology Science Conference! Astrobiology is a novel approach to the scientific study of the living universe. It seeks to understand the origin and evolution of life on Earth, to determine if life exists elsewhere in the universe, and to predict the future of life on Earth and in the rest of the universe. To this end it relies on a diversity of disciplines, and has inspired new metadisciplines. In April 2000, NASA Ames Research Center and the NASA Astrobiology Institute hosted the first Astrobiology Science Conference. Much to the surprise of the organizers, it attracted over 650 participants from dozens of countries. The sessions were based on themes such as "Water: the Sine Qua Non of Life." Each session was led by invited plenary speakers, and followed by contributed talks selected for their topical excitement from over 370 submitted abstracts. The many excellent posters attracted viewers during special poster times, lunches, and evenings. The second conference will be similar in flavor: an intellectual feast. The format will have a few enhancements. On Sunday April 7 we will offer overview talks in disciplines for those who want a refreshing way to get "up to speed" outside their area of expertise. At the same time we will showcase NASA Ames Research Center. The evening will conclude with a barbeque and an opportunity for a first viewing of the posters. During several afternoons there will be concurrent sessions, which will allow for more oral presentations and more intimate discussions following the talks. Finally, we hope to schedule some evening events of a more light-hearted nature such as a sci fi night.

The Astrobiology Science Conference (AbSciCon) 2006 will be held March 26-30, 2006 in Washington, D.C., at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center . All are invited to join the astrobiology community at this exceptional facility that lies in the heart of Washington, just off the Mall, blocks from the White House, and with easy access to all areas of the city via the Metro. The meeting will be held when the cherry blossoms are nearing their peak at the Tidal Basin! A private evening tour and reception are scheduled at the Smithsonian's Natural History museum, site of the United States meteorite collection.
NASA Ames Research Center and the NASA Astrobiology Institute (NAI) hosted the first three Astrobiology Science Conferences. The sessions were based on themes, such as "Water the Sine Qua Non of Life". Each session was lead by invited plenary speakers, and followed by contributed talks selected for their topical excitement from over 370 submitted abstracts. The many excellent posters attracted viewers during special poster times, lunches, and evenings. In the 2nd meeting the format was enhanced by overview talks in disciplines for those who wanted a refreshing way to get "up to speed" outside their area of expertise. From cosmology to human intelligence, the AbSciCon covers the intellectual breadth of astrobiology.
AbSciCon 2006 builds on the successes of these previous meetings. Astrobiology is a novel approach to the scientific study of the living universe. It seeks to understand the origin and evolution of life on Earth, to determine if life exists elsewhere in the universe, and to predict the future of life on Earth and in the rest of the universe. To this end it relies on the diversity of disciplines and has inspired new meta-disciplines. Abstracts are solicited on all topics that span the enormous range of astrobiological themes. The meeting format will include a limited number of plenary talks that will complement a larger number of oral presentations in parallel thematic sessions. As has always been the case at previous AbSciCon's, the poster sessions, including the NAI sponsored Student Poster Competition, will continue to be a particularly important and successful venue for the exchange of scientific ideas.

Welcome to the Astrobiology Society of Britain
Mission Statements The Astrobiology Society of Britain, founded in March 2003, serves its members and the astrobiology community as a whole in the UK in fostering links between the various and many disciplines that comprise the science of astrobiology in order to ensure that astrobiology research in the UK is vigorous, progressive and successful. It seeks to provide a mechanism for members of the astrobiology community to meet, collaborate, make the community aware of UK astrobiology activities, and encourage new students and researchers into the field. It seeks to act as a professional society to organise and co-sponsor meetings and provide an environment favourable for the development of inter-disciplinary connections between biological and space sciences. Title: The Living Cosmos Author: Chris Impey Reviewed by Lewis Dartnell Chris Impey is a professor of astronomy at University of Arizona, and has done a fine job with this latest effort at bringing astrobiology to the popular science market. Impey has clearly done his research thoroughly, and interviewed a great number of the key scientists whilst writing the book.

Astrobiology feels their pain. The field is young enough to still have vocal critics; in particular, those who think that "astrobiology" is nothing more than a hope that life will someday be discovered beyond Earth. It's true that incontrovertible proof of extraterrestrial life is still lacking. But there are just two paths to the future: either we will eventually find biology elsewhere, or we won't. If you are among those who think that only Earth has spawned life, then astrobiology is, indeed, only useful in proving your hypothesis by enduring endless failure to reach its ultimate goal. But if it seems plausible that, among the 10 thousand billion billion other star systems of the visible universe, there are some places where the remarkable chemical interplay we call life also occurs, than astrobiology research can only speed its discovery. A quick head count of astrobiologists at the SETI Institute tallies almost 50, and there are about 75 more across the freeway populating the cubes and labs of NASA's Astrobiology Institute at the Ames Research Center. This contingent, as impressive as it is, is merely a local condensation in a far larger cloud of researchers. Nationwide, it's reckoned there are approximately a thousand scientists who would be proud to print "astrobiologist" on their business cards.

General information about the Graduate School in Astrobiology
The graduate school in Astrobiology is based at Stockholm University and got started in September 2006. 8 graduate students were selected to embark on an interdisciplinary PhD programme. Astrobiology is a new and rapidly expanding field. It tries to find answers to questions such as:
  • What are we actually defining as life? Where does physics and chemistry end and the evolution of life and biology begin? Which are the conditions for life to emerge on planets and remain there? Is or was life on other planets (e.g. Mars) or their satellites (e.g. Titan) possible? To which extent can building blocks of biomolecules (e.g. amino acids and carbohydrates) be formed in the interstellar medium? How do simple molecules evolve into complex biopolymers (e.g. proteins, RNA and DNA) and to which extent is this development affected by influences from space? Which molecular components of cells were formed first: enzymes, genes or membranes? What can lifeforms in extreme environments tell us about life in early stages of our planet (and possibly other planets)?

We encourage everyone to come to our meetings, as Astrobiology is a very interesting and universal topic. Most meetings include a presentation by a speaker on a topic related to Astrobiology. Audience sizes are usually small (5-30 people), making the presentations a great opportunity to talk with professors who are among the best in their respective fields.
