Astrobiology
Astrobiology is an interdisciplinary field, combining aspects of astronomy, biology and geology, which is focused primarily on the study of the origin, distribution and evolution of life. It comes from the Greek words astron = star, bios = life and logos = word/science), and is also known as exobiology (Greek: exo = out) or xenobiology (Greek: xenos = foreign). Some major astrobiological research topics include:
  • What is life?
  • How did life arise on Earth?
  • What kind of environments can life tolerate?
  • How can we determine if life exists on other planets?
  • How often can we expect to find complex life?
  • What will life consist of (DNA/Carbon based? Physiology?) on other planets?
Exobiology and xenobiology are terms also found in science fiction, although typically such terms refer to the speculative biology of an extraterrestrial. A xenobiologist is usually a human doctor or biologist who is expert on the physiology of alien organisms and life forms. Overview Although astrobiology is an emerging field, the question of whether life exists elsewhere in the universe is a verifiable hypothesis and thus a valid line of scientific enquiry. Astrobiology does not claim to be a pure scientific discipline in the sense of physics or biology but rather represents an effort by researchers in different disciplines to attempt answers to questions about life by drawing on knowledge of multiple scientific fields. Since we have only one example of a planet teeming with life most work is speculative, educated guesses based on fundamental laws of physics, (bio-)chemistry, and our current understanding of biology.

    In 2006 the American Philosophical Society and the NASA Astrobiology Institute (NAI) partnered to promote the continued exploration of the world around us through a program of research grants in support of astrobiological field studies. The NAI-supported Lewis and Clark Fund for Exploration and Field Research in Astrobiology awarded over $25,000 to 6 scholars in 2006, its first year of existence, and expects to award at least that amount in 2007. Astrobiology is the study of the origin, evolution, distribution, and future of life on Earth and in the universe. It encompasses research in, among others, the fields of astronomy, chemistry, evolutionary biology, field and population biology, geology, microbiology, molecular biology, oceanography, paleontology, and planetary science. Astrobiology includes investigations of the geologic and fossil record to understand the conditions of the early Earth when life arose. Its scope also includes research of contemporary locations on Earth that might be similar to early earth and to environments elsewhere in our Solar System (such as on Mars, Europa, and Titan), which may be, or have been in the past, suitable for life. Astrobiology is also about understanding the characteristics of life, which requires investigations into extreme natural environments on Earth and, eventually, elsewhere. The Lewis and Clark Fund for Exploration and Field Research in Astrobiology is open to field studies in any area of interest to astrobiology. Applications will be reviewed by a committee that includes members of the NAI, the APS, and the wider science community as needed. Recipients will be designated as Lewis and Clark Field Scholars in Astrobiology.

As such, the domain of this guide is limited to resources readily available to this user group. “Readily available” is defined as materials held in the collection at NASA Headquarters Library and materials available in full-text format either over the Internet or through NASA Headquarter’s institutional subscriptions. It uses interdisciplinary science at the intersection of biology, geology and physics to discover where and under what conditions life can arise and exist in the universe. The two main goals of this course are:
  • To provide information on the central concepts related to the field of Astrobiology, and To provide experiences with using and creating student-centered and inquiry-based curriculum materials for teaching astrobiology that are aligned with the National Science Education Standards.
  • NASA Astrobiology Roadmap The NASA Astrobiology Roadmap is the product of the efforts of more than 150 scientists and technologists, spanning a broad range of disciplines. Astrobiology is the study of life in the universe. It provides a biological perspective to many areas of NASA research, linking such endeavors as the search for habitable planets, exploration missions to Mars and Europa, efforts to understand the origin of life, and planning for the future of life beyond Earth. Astrobiology addresses three basic questions, which have been asked in some form for generations.     Scientific Goals The Astrobiology Explorer (ABE) would address outstanding problems in Astrobiology, Astrochemistry, and Astrophysics by making fundamental scientific progress in the following areas:
    • The entire evolutionary sequence of organics in the interstellar medium from stellar outflows, through the interstellar medium, and into forming planetary systems. The composition of Solar System objects ranging from dust to asteroids and comets to planets and their satellites. The evolution of prebiotic material in galaxies as a function of morphological type, luminosity class, metallicity, stage of interaction, activity type, and age. The distribution of deuterium across the entire evolutionary sequence as a tracer of the connections between interstellar and planetary materials.
