Astrobiophysics is concerned with the effect of astrophysical processes on life on Earth, as well as effects on possible life elsewhere, and the detection of such life. A wide variety of research areas meet here, including astrophysics, astronomy, biochemistry, evolutionary biology, paleontology, atmospheric science , and a host of others.
Do Gamma-Ray Bursts Damage Planetary Biospheres?
GRBs are the most powerful known explosions in the Universe, sending out beams of radiation that have been an active research interest for more than 30 years. Only in the 90's was it firmly understood that they are at huge, cosmological distances, and therefore correspondingly powerful. They are probably created by the energy released when a star collapses to form a black hole. For more background you can read this public discussion produced by NASA, or a slightly more technical discussion with an entry into the scientific literature here. Knowing the power of these bursts and their average rate throughout the Universe, it is possible to calculate the likely rate of events in our "neighborhood". In this case, any burst on our side of the Milky Way galaxy is likely to be dangerous, if it is pointed at the Earth. Several groups have independently estimated that one or more GRBs is likely to have "blasted" the Earth from a distance of 6,000 light years, or even less, within the last 500 million years or so. Some evidence to support this rate has come from the observation of a GRB

Astrobiology in the ASRG

Astrobiology is the study of the origin, evolution, distribution, and destiny of life in the universe. It uses many scientific disciplines and space technologies to address these essential issues. While these questions are as old as civilization, advances in science and space technology make it possible for us to find answers to them. More planets have been discovered outside our solar system than exist in it. Life has been found to exist under conditions previously thought impossible. The discovery of life on Mars or Europa would add priority to the search for Earth-like planets orbiting other stars in our galaxy, and to the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.
There are three paths along which the search for other life in the universe is being pursued: detection of planets in the "livable zone" around distant stars

We can only accept cash in Euros for the catering and dinner fees The distance from the downtown hotels (harmburger börs, seurahuone etc) to the meeting place is about 1.5-2km. Public transport is available, but a more convenient method of transport could be a carpool in a taxi. We expect a taxi to cost less than 15 euros, and normally 4 people fit quite comfortably into a taxi. Just in case you need a taxi number especially for late flight arrivals - it is 02-10041 - and they speak/understand english. A pdf version of the program and schedule is available.

NAI IFA HOME Double Sunrise - A new theory proposes Earth-like planets with double the star power. New An Earth-like planet in a two-star system is a possibility, according to Nader Haghighipour and Sean Raymond, post-doctoral fellows at the University of Hawaii and the University of Colorado, respectively. They defined which parameters such a system would require to support a habitable planet in the September 1 Astrophysical Journal. Although the existence of an Earth-like planet in a binary star system has never been deemed impossible, there are plenty of complications: The distance of the planet from the sun it orbits, the length of that orbit and the distance from the other sun all determine whether or not life is possible.

Bioastronomy 2007: Molecules, Microbes and Extraterrestrial Life The conference was held on July 16 -20, 2007, San Juan Puerto Rico.
This meeting will serve to bring together an international interdisciplinary group of researchers to share and discuss the latest findings related to origins of solar systems, space resources and exploration for life, topics highly relevant to the new NASA Exploration vision. As an outcome of this meeting we expect to produce a refereed Conference Volume, and through a teacher education program, forge new education collaborations.

Kimberly Binsted Participated in FMARS 2007 Kimberly Binsted participated in FMARS 2007, which was a four-month exploration simulation in a Mars analogue environment, the Haughton impact structure on Devon Island in the Canadian High Arctic. The goal was to experience (and hopefully overcome) some of the challenges of manned Mars exploration. The scientists conducted 22 science projects, including biology and geology field science and human factors experiments, the results of which will appear soon in the relevant journals.
