RSS addthis_url = location.href; addthis_title = document.title; addthis_pub = 'ogdenpubs'; According to the National Honey Board (that's right), the United States' honey crop last year brought in 145 million dollars. While beekeeping is both a hobby and a devotion for thousands across the country, it can also be a lucrative home business. I have met many people who are intrigued by the idea of keeping bees but who have never given it a try, simply because they don't know where to begin. For such a big business, there is precious little information out there on how to get a bee enterprise's wheels turning. What follows is my personal blueprint for success in the field. Like any other worthwhile accomplishment, the job is at once easy and arduous, a labor of love with a healthy dose of sweat equity.

Although Beekeeping is being written with the initial intent in aiding hobbyist, it is a growing resource that could also aid commercial beekeepers similarly. This Wiki book however, is not being written in a completely linear manner. Because of the writing style of this book, through the act of simply reading it chapter-by-chapter content will be lost. Reading in this manner should still prove to be worthwhile, but more topics and greater depth may be uncovered by following links within the text. Much like other Wiki based texts, Beekeeping is dependant on the collaborative effort of the community. A healthy and secure Florida honey bee industry is valuable to all. Florida Apiary Inspectors certify movement of honey bee colonies throughout the state and nation. These colonies are monitored for diseases, honey bee pests and unwanted species. The Department has the most comprehensive state program (e.g., numbers of inspectors and traps) to prevent the accidental introduction of the unwanted Africanized honey bee. Seventeen million pounds of honey are produced in Florida each year and enjoyed around the world as the sweetener of choice. Honey bees, otherwise know as the Angels of Agriculture , are the strongest link in the chain between food producers and consumers.

Starting a Small
Beekeeping Operation
Eric C. Mussen, Extension Apiculturist, UC Davis The number of US beekeepers has declined steadily since World War II, partly because land development has eliminated many flowering plants from which bees collect nectar to make honey. However, nearly 100,000 people in the US still keep bees for fun or profit. Beekeepers enjoy being their own bossesdeciding what to do and when to do it, being responsible for their own successes or failures. Beekeepers are adept at, and spend a significant amount of time in, assembling and repairing hives, frames, and other equipment. They enjoy the natural world and appreciate the contribution their bees make in increasing plants and benefiting the animals that use the plants for food and shelter.
Getting Started in Beekeeping
One knowledgeable beekeeper is needed for every 500 to 1,000 colonies. Without some experience and lots of sage advice, taking care of a commercial beekeeping operation would be overwhelming. Experienced beekeepers are full of advice. Their years of experience have shown them what does and doesn't work. These beekeepers are also your best bet at getting into the business. With your enthusiasm and his or her expertise and apiary locations, you could work out a phased retirement plan that eventually leaves you in charge. When kept in a healthy, stress-free condition, bees will thrive as long as food and water are available in abundance. But this success can be a problem. Populous colonies often swarm in the spring. While fascinating to watch, it is not appreciated by neighbors in whose bushes the swarm settles. Worse, the swarm sometimes finds an opening and moves into the wall of the neighbor's house.

The exchange of honey was used to put a seal on the resolution of disputes and the creation of pacts between both tribesmen and tribes. The possession of honey of local production is a status symbol. In modern-day Yemen, an offer of honey continues to have an important role when welcoming a guest. Honey is often served in banquets. Honey and eggs are considered important for fertility and physical strength and therefore are given to young bridegrooms or circumcised boys. Yemeni tradition prescribes honey together with melted butter for consumption by mothers immediately after childbirth. It is widely used in folk medicine. For experienced or beginning beekeepers This course covers basic bee biology with an emphasis on bee colony management, taught by University of Delaware entomology professor Dewey M. Caron who specializes in the field of apiology and apiculture. The course includes hands-on, practical activities and is a scientific approach to studying the life of honey bees, including bee biology, anatomy, physiology, behavior, bee botany, and communication. In addition, the course offers an introduction to beekeeping, including techniques for practical bee care, bee culturing, and managing honey bees for honey production and crop pollination services. Beekeeping Online helps solidify the knowledge base of beekeeping as a science and an art at a level appropriate for both beginners and experienced beekeepers. Beginners will learn the basics of bee biology, and how to start and manage their own bee colony. Practicing beekeepers will be able to add an interesting dimension to their beekeeping experiences by expanding their academic knowledge of apiology and apiculture at the college level of study, as well as their information on bee colony management.

A LOOK AT THE U.S. BEEKEEPING INDUSTRY
The beekeeping industry in the United States
is so diverse that characterizations are difficult;
however, some generalizations can be made.
In terms of numbers of colonies* and involvement in beekeeping as a profit-making enterprise, the range of beekeepers runs from hobbyists with one or two colonies in a backyard or "out at the farm," to sideliners operating up to 500 colonies to bring in a second income, to commercial operators with thousands of colonies and several employees on their payrolls. The "typical" commercial beekeeper, for whom beekeeping is the main source of income, operates 1,500 to 2,500 colonies and has full time employees and additional harvest-time help. Depending on the area of the country and other factors, a colony of bees will produce 80 to 120 pounds of surplus (harvestable) honey in an average year. To the beekeeper, the value of raw honey is about 80 cents per pound, up from 50 cents in 1994. Currently, about 2.4 million colonies of bees in the United States produce about 210 million pounds of honey in any given year. Consumption is about 275 million pounds.

George And Audrey DeLange
George and his friend Al Weichold kept bees in the Phoenix, Arizona area from about 1966 to about 1992. During that time they learned a lot about how to produce honey in Arizona. George learned most of what he knew about beekeeping from Al. George shared what he learned by teaching beekeeping for several years. This page shows a little bit of what that beekeeping experience was like. As the years passed the Phoenix area became less agricultural and more urban. The killer bees were migrating into the area from Mexico and the trachea mite began to become a problem. More and more citrus trees were being destroyed for homes and more and more laws were being passed that restricted where bees could be kept. George and Al both decided to abandon the beekeeping business and to move on to other interests. Of course, once a beekeeper, always a beekeeper and the love of beekeeping is still there. Al moved on to El Paso, Texas and started keeping bees as a hobby in that area until his passing after a short illness a few years ago. George still lives in the Glendale area, in a urban neighborhood about a quarter mile from where he kept his bees. George never thought that this would have happened as it did! Glendale and Peoria have certainly grown, but George often wonders; what will be their future without the bees?
