Preserving Biodiversity Photograph by Michael Nichols Your Mission Create a map that shows where some endangered species live in the world. Briefing Have you ever heard someone use the term "dead as a dodo"? The dodo this saying refers to was a flightless bird species that lived on an island in the Indian Ocean. The bird, which weighed about 46 pounds (22 kilograms), first encountered humans in the 16th century. Inhabitants of the island found that they could easily hunt and kill the dodo, both for food and for sport. By 1681 there were no dodos left on the island or anywhere else in the world. They had become extinct. People often associate the word "extinct" with dinosaurs, which have not lived on Earth for more than 66 million years. But there are many creatures, like the dodo, that have only recently become extinct. Many scientists blame these extinctions on humans. Although extinct species cannot be brought back to life, plants and animals that are endangered, or in danger of becoming extinct, can still be saved.

At the same Conference, the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which has subsequently entered into force, was opened for signature. In 2002, the World Summit on Sustainable Development, in Johannesburg, addressed biological diversity in Chapter IV, paragraph , of the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation. The Johannesburg Summit also endorsed the target to achieve, by 2010, a significant reduction of the current rate of biodiversity loss at global, regional and national levels as a contribution to poverty alleviation and to the benefit of all life on earth, which had some months earlier been adopted by the sixth meeting of the CBD Conference of Parties (COP). Biodiversity has also been discussed by the Commission on Sustainable Development on several occasions and is one of the themes for discussion in the 2012/2013 two-year cycle.

Biodiversity, or biological diversity, is the variety of life on Earth and the processes and interactions that sustain it. There are three kinds of biodiversity: ecosystem diversity, genetic diversity, and species diversity. Ecosystem or habitat diversity refers to the variety of places where life exists?from rainforests to oceans, from deserts to wetlands. Genetic diversity refers to the variation of genes within species. When most people refer to biodiversity, however, they are talking about species diversity, or the vast complex of species that make up the living world. [more]
