Enzyme complex could be key to new cancer treatments
In these microscopic images of cells, the white areas indicate the presence of enzymes. The enzymes in images A and C are distributed throughout the cytoplasm because these cells were grown in the presence of purines. In contrast, the enzymes in images B and D occur in small clusters because these cells were grown in the absence of purines. Credit: Penn State Penn State scientists are the first to observe in living cells a key step in the creation of adenine and guanine, two of the four building blocks that comprise DNA. Also called purines, the two building blocks are essential for cell replication. The findings, which will be published in the 4 April 2008 issue of the journal Science, could lead to new cancer treatments that prevent cancer cells from replicating by interfering with their abilities to make purines. INFORMATION ABOUT The Department Congratulations to Dr. Jeff Dawson, Assistant Professor, Department of Biology Dr. Dawson is studying how the biblical plague locust, and other insects, process sensory information to avoid predators, how their wings move during flight to achieve a high degree of manoeuvrability, how wing shape affects lift and drag and especially what aerodynamic tricks insects use to stay in the air. Dr. Dawson uses both real insects and model wings and flapping devices (robots) in his research. He collaborates with the National Research Council to develop artificial insect wings and the Canadian Museum of Nature to accurately reproduce the 3D structure of wings. He will use his CFI funds to construct a state-of-the-art, multidisciplinary research facility for visualizing and measuring how air moves over and around the surface of insect wings. Welcome to Carleton Biology
These are exciting times for Biology: enormous advances in genomics coupled with unprecedented developments in interdisciplinary research are making this the Century of Biology. We invite you to join us in these exciting times.

The department offers an undergraduate curriculum designed to provide students with up-to-date training in the biological sciences. The curriculum includes a core of courses in the biological and physical sciences and mathematics. Fields of concentration in the department are ecology and evolution and molecular and cellular biology. The Biology Department participates in several graduate programs, including interdepartmental Ph.D. programs in Cell and Molecular Biology Ecology, Evolution and Conservation Biology , the Biotechnology BS/MS Degree Program and two Biology Masters Degree Programs . Plan A is a program culminating in a research thesis for students interested in pursuing further advanced degrees or employment in biological research. Plan B is a program leading to a non-thesis Masters Degree, and is intended as the terminal degree for students seeking careers in industry, education, agencies, or other areas. Students may select from three areas in which to concentrate their study: (1) Cell and Molecular Biology, (2) Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology, or (3) General Biology.
