Welcome to the
Biology Department
Biology at Boston University is a broadly-based department with faculty interested in biological problems at the molecular, organismal, and population levels. Thus we have a rare strength in addressing questions at all organizational levels of Biology and in ways that combine our knowledge in these areas.
The Department has five graduate program areas: Ecology, Behavior and Evolution; Physiology, Endocrinology and Reproduction; Neurobiology; Cell and Molecular Biology; and Marine Biology. Each program area has unique strengths and suggested curricula. The Department offers both master's and doctoral degrees in Biology that emphasize independent research on the part of the student, and a nonresearch master's degree. Many Biology faculty participate in interdepartmental programs that offer graduate degrees in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology and Biochemistry Neuroscience , and Bioinformatics. Biology News Dr. Les Kaufman's research on the fish population of Lake Victoria was featured in the BU Today article, Nightmare of Global Proportions.

A purine rich region of the (+) RNA genome of retroviruses and retrotransposons, the polypurine-tract (PPT), is resistant to hydrolysis by the RNase H subdomain of reverse transcriptase (RT) and ultimately serves as a primer for (+)-strand DNA synthesis. Here, Yi-Brunozzi et al. applied NMR spectroscopy to search for pre-existing structural features in RNA/DNA PPT-containing hybrids, derived from HIV-1 and Ty3, in the absence of RT. While both hybrids were found to adopt global A-form like helical geometries, observed structural perturbations in hybrids modified through base-pair changes or by incorporation of a thymine isostere, 2,4-difluoro-5-methylbenzene, suggest that PPTs may function as structurally coupled domains.

Welcome to BMC Biology published by BioMed Central BMC Biology - the flagship biology journal of the BMC series - publishes research and methodology articles of special importance and broad interest in any area of biology and biomedical sciences. BMC Biology (ISSN 1741-7007) is covered by PubMed, MEDLINE, BIOSIS, CAS, Scopus, EMBASE, Zoological Record, Thomson Scientific (ISI) and Google Scholar. The journal will receive its first Impact Factor in 2008.
    Featured articles
    Revealing regulators of neurogenesis
BMC Biology Novel cofactors of Mash1 and Ngn2, proneural genes involved in mammalian brain development, have been identified by a combination of experimental and bioinformatic approaches, establishing a new understanding of the gene regulatory networks behind neurogenesis.
    Late permanent teeth unite Afrotheria
BMC Biology The recently recognized Afrotherian mammals, initially grouped according to molecular evidence, have now been found to share the morphological characteristic of late eruption of permanent teeth, providing a defining feature for this otherwise diverse group.

    DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGY
    OVERVIEW
We live in a world of unprecedented advances in the biological sciences. Biologists now have the molecular tools and the theoretical models required to answer long-standing questions in genetics, neuroscience, evolution, cell biology, and many other disciplines.
The Department of Biology at the University of Maryland, College Park is committed to solving the challenges confronting modern biology by the integrated study of biomolecules, cells, organisms, and populations, within the context of how these entities interact with the natural environment. Laboratories throughout the department thrive by working across these traditional levels of biological investigation.

Elipsa links Rabs to cilia Articles by Omori et al IFT particles move along axonemal microtubules in cilia but how these particles drive ciliary membrane formation is unclear. Malicki and colleagues show that an IFT component, Elipsa, interacts with the GTPase regulator rabaptin5 and the GTPase Rab8, which both localize to membranes.
