First Aid for Sick or Injured Birds
Birds are fragile creatures that need prompt medical attention when they become ill or injured. Emergencies can happen anytime, so it's important for bird owners to be prepared for them, and to know how to deal with them. To help bird owners familiarize themselves with the proper treatments for the most common avian afflictions, Teresa Linton of Cockatiel.org has compiled this handy guide to Bird First Aid . While it is not intended to be a substitute for a trip to the avian vet, it may help you stabilize your pet while you are on the way. If you think that your bird may be sick, then it's a good idea to review this list of Common Signs of Illness in Birds so that any health problems can be caught and treated as early as possible. permalink comments (0)

Birds are a monophyletic lineage, evolved once from a common ancestor, and all birds are related through that common origin. There are a few kinds of birds that don't fly, but their ancestors did, and these birds have secondarily lost the ability to fly. Modern birds have traits related to hot metabolism, and to flight:
  • horny beak, no teeth large muscular stomach feathers large yolked, hard-shelled eggs. The parent bird provides extensive care of the young until it is grown, or gets some other bird to look after the young. strong skeleton
There are about 30 orders of birds, about 180 families, and about 2,000 genera with 10,000 species. Most of them don't live in Michigan, though there are about 400 species that do. Related web sites: BIRDNET Bird Accounts 2008/03/16 02:19:02.115 GMT-4

All About Birds
A creature once believed to have hunted pre-historic mankind, the bird has evolved over several million years into one of the most beautiful and mysterious creatures roaming the Earth today. There are more then 10,000 species of these warm-blooded, egg-laying, feathered vertebrates in the world today and only just over 2,000 of these have been seen in North America. South America has the largest population with more than 3,200 species of birds residing there, and surprisingly even Antarctica is home to more than 60 diverse species. Many questions as to the origins of the bir still exist even today. Many believe that birds are actually some of the oldest living creatures still thriving on Earth today, dating all the way back to the days of the dinosaur . But just where exactly do birds come from? What significance do birds have in the existing food chain today, and how have they assisted in the evolution of our planet into what it is today? Find out the answers to these questions and more here on LiveScience.com. From humming birds to wild birds of prey, our comprehensive articles and bird pictures , along with a host of other interactive features will illuminate the world of the bird right before your eyes. Keep up to date with the latest bird news, as well as learn what you can do to help preserve the lives of bird species around the globe.

Birds Birds are bipedal animals , which means they have two feet and can stand, walk, and run. They are warm-blooded animals that can lay eggs . Eggs are usually laid in a nest and are incubated by the parents. Most birds take care of their young for an extended length of time after hatching.
Birds have feathers and a beak with no teeth . Birds have a very lightweight but strong skeleton . They have forelimbs that are covered with feathers and are called wings . The wings and lightweight skeleton allows them to fly. Birds range in size from the 2 inch Bee Hummingbird to the Ostrich which can grow to 9 feet tall
There are about 10,000 species of birds. Many of the species migrate long distances.

Birding Vacations that are Meaningful
Planning a birding vacation? Would you like to help conserve wild birds? Consider volunteering on your next birding vacation. Volunteer vacations present unique birding opportunities, normally available only to professional ornithologists. In addition to excellent birding, volunteer vacations also provide meaningful opportunities to contribute to avian conservation. There are several non-profit organizations that lead volunteer vacations around the world. Life Net is a compelling example of a non-profit that offers unique birding volunteer vacations. Founded in the 1990’s by conservation scientists, Life Net has led volunteer vacations focused on a variety of wildlife species in North America and South America. Life Net is currently organizing a volunteer expedition to help preserve cloud forest birds in Ecuador. Birders joining the cloud forest expedition are guided by experienced ornithologists and can anticipate seeing as many as 250 species, including 25 hummingbird species. The volunteer contribution for the two week expedition is $1200, not including travel expenses to and from Quito, Ecuador. Click here to learn more about the upcoming cloud forest expedition, and other Life Net opportunities.

Birds page 1 Introduction From the very start of recorded time we have been watching birds fly. They do such wonderful things: taking off, flying with twists and turns, soaring and diving, and landing again on a small branch. Fossil records show that birds have been flying for millions of years. prehistoric bird Man had to realize that he could not fly just like a bird. We are not made that way. It was not until man developed the internal combustion engine that he could deal with the problem of minimum weight and maximum power.
internal combustion engine Everything about a bird is made for flight. In order to understand the natural flight of birds, we must first look at the structure of a bird. What makes a bird a bird? mallard duck There are common things that all birds have . We must explore the earliest birds and look at the actual mechanics of flying. In this way we can understand how birds take off, fly, and land. What Makes a Bird a Bird? Birds are unique. In the animal kingdom birds have two reasons for being special. First, all birds have feathers. And second, all birds live in a hurry. Everything about a bird is fast. They breathe faster than any other animal. Their heart beats faster, and their body temperature is higher. Birds have a backbone. Birds are warm blooded. This means that their body temperature remains the same even in differing temperatures. Birds lay eggs and defend themselves with a bill or a beak. All birds have wings, but not all birds fly.

That may be the way to get home from the wonderful Land of Oz, but for wild birds looking for a place to raise their families during spring nesting season, things can be a bit more complicated. You can play a helpful, interactive role during this season by placing nesting materials and birdhouses around your backyard, possibly enticing some of the many cavity nesting birds. Providing birdhouses can make your birds' lives a little easier. After all, they're expending lots of energy migrating, courting and looking for scarce food. Most of last year’s natural food sources have been depleted, and the majority of this year’s seeds and berries won’t be available until much later.

The $3,000 Birdhouse
An exact reproduction by Karl Goldsmith of a house designed and built by American landscape architect Fletcher Steele in 1939 for the Helen Ellwanger Estate. Articles about the house can be found here and here
Goldsmith is obviously filling a niche for people who have more money than they know what to do with, and crafting beautiful pieces of artwork in the process. These people have a right to spend their money as they wish, of course, but I'm thinking it would be nice if some of it were put to good use on bird conservation projects rather than on decorative objects for their fancy gardens. Just one man's opinion. posted by John L. Trapp at
