Birds
Birds first appeared about 150 million years ago. Birds now live almost everywhere on Earth. There are over 8,000 species of birds. Birds have 3 major differentiating characteristics: wings for flight, feathers, and a beak rather than teeth. Birds have adapted their vertebrate skeleton for flight. Their bones and skull are very thin, making their bodies extremely light. To support flight also required other changes to their skeleton. Obvious changes are the addition of wings. The claws and muscles of a bird's foot are designed to lock and hold onto a perch even while the bird is sleeping. A bird's respiratory system is also adapted to make it easier to breathe at high elevations, where air is thinner.

http://www.belizezoo.org/zoo/zoo/bird.html
Birds are a group of animals that have a backbone similar to mammals and Reptiles. They are warm blooded like mammals, but do not have hair on their bodies. Instead, they are clothed with feathers. All birds also lay eggs, and most incubate the eggs by using body warmth. By one recent account, Belize supports 543 species of birds. Birds thrive in all of Belize's habitats. Wading birds congregate along the coastline and inner lagoons. The grasslands and savannas provide seeds for the many finches, and nesting trees for the giant jabiru Stork. And the tropical forests There is an astonishing diversity of bird species. Watching birds in the tropical forests of Belize can tend to be very frustrating at times, and extremely rewarding at others. The thick vegetation of tropical forests, and the typical behavior of quick, seemingly random movements of many forest birds, make them often difficult to see. Many birds also live in the upper canopy of the forest, making it a strain to be constantly looking upward. But early morning and late afternoon are excellent times to bird watch, as most bird species are feeding or moving to new locations during these times. The Belize Zoo has always had a strong collection of bird species, from parrots and macaws, to vultures and hawks, to wading birds, including the endangered Jabiru Stork. But besides the caged birds, the habitat around the zoo supports a variety of "free" birds thriving within the savanna habitat.

I thought that maybe today I would have something profound to say about blogging, about my experience here at little birds, about the impact it has had on my life, about connections, about community, about appreciating everyday beauty, but I already feel myself going into the silence that has been a long time coming. I will instead just say thank you . Thank you for visiting, for commenting, for encouraging me, for connecting with me. It's been a really nice ride. It has changed my life and pushed me in directions that I never expected. A true gift. Thank you Take good care. I'll see you around. xo,

On these pages are the sounds of North American birds (Costa Rican birds have their own page, below) - not just bird calls or bird songs, but all the sounds birds make, such as wing sounds and bill rattles. Since most bird species use different vocalizations for different circumstances, I've tried to tell you what the bird was doing at the time of the recording. It has become even more obvious to me during this project that a bird's vocalizations can be nearly as complex in the information they contain as our own. Individuals of a species sing different songs with different "words" and "phrases" than another individual, and the same species from different territories sing about different things in different ways. One of my ongoing trials is what to call the sounds birds make. They sing, they talk, they whinny and squawk and squeak. They chip and chirp and chack, and the cry and crow and caw. Some ducks quack, some whistle, some peep or screech. Some birds bark or croak or grunt or grumble. Many species, at one time or another mutter and mumble and whisper. I find myself making up onomatopoeic names like "Chack" and "Pipe" and "Chuckerring". Flickers have a "Klear" call, Great Blue Herons "Gronk". If you have a name for some bird's sound, share it with me - some day I'll write a bird call thesaurus! Most files are in Windows WAV format, and all have been edited for file size and clarity. Many have been filtered in ways which do not affect the bird's song, but which may highlight the important parts of the sample. Most samples have been reduced to 8-bit resolution and have been "downsampled" from their original 44.1 Khz to save bandwidth and therefore reduce loading times. More exacting sound collectors are encouraged to contact me for larger, unedited and unfiltered versions of these sounds. MP3 files are now available for many of the longer samples. MPeg 3 (MP3) files are compressed files which will downlaod faster than regular WAV files and play perfectly! Typically MP3 files average 8-10% the size of the same WAV file. If you need a MP3 decoder to play these files

An outbreak of a bird disease such as Exotic Newcastle Disease or Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza could not only harm your birds, it could kill other nearby birds and quickly spread through your flock. In order to prevent such an outbreak, USDA, in cooperation with States, has begun a campaign to promote avian health by encouraging bird owners Look for Signs. Watch for signs of disease or unexpected deaths among your birds. Report Sick Birds. Early detection can make a difference. If your birds are sick or dying, call USDA's Veterinary Services toll free at
, or your State Veterinarian or local extension agent to find out why. Practice Backyard Biosecurity. Keep your birds free from disease. Restrict traffic on your property, and disinfect shoes, clothes and hands to prevent the possible spread of disease. You are the best protection your birds have!
