Description
Aquatic Botany is concerned with fundamental studies on structure, function, dynamics and classification of plant-dominated aquatic communities and ecosystems, as well as molecular, biochemical and physiological aspects of aquatic plants. It is also an outlet for papers dealing with applied research on plant-dominated aquatic systems, including the consequences of disturbance (e.g. transplantation, influence of herbicides and other chemicals, thermal pollution, biological control, grazing and disease), the use of aquatic plants, conservation of resources, and all aspects of aquatic plant production and decomposition.

SUVs and Fuel Prices
Wondering whether rising oil prices have affected SUV sales? Read this article about how Fuel prices have SUV owners anxious to unload big vehicles at 11:00 AM 2 comments Labels: fossil fuels oil prices
A Fossil Fuel Free Future
A few days ago, I posted a link to an article about how the democratic presidential candidates have both received funding from the nuclear industry. I had been wondering where they stood on the nuclear energy issue, and the article answered some of my questions. (I don't mean to imply that McCain is any better: according to this chart on Grist , he wholeheartedly supports a nuclear future.)
After posting that link I became embroiled in a debate with pro-nuke blogger Red Craig, who is aware of the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and curb global warming, but reduces the issue to a choice between nuclear energy and coal.
It's based on this point of view that I believe that beefing up the nuclear infrastructure is not the way to salvage the climate or preserve the biosphere. Rather, it would replace one long term problem with another.
We are already feeling the effects of spewing waste from fossil fuels into the air. If we allow the nuclear power industry to build a lot more plants, they will generate a lot of radioactive waste that has to be stored on land or underground. And there is no safe, fool-proof way to do so. No one wants the nuclear waste that already exists to be stored near them (would you?), and there is no way to neutralize it.

From Algae to Fuel
Algae Accumulation, Kesterson National Wildlife Refuge
Photo courtesy USFWS With the rising gas prices, we are all feeling a crunch at the gas pump. Well, there is good news on the way.
Researchers are working on a method for using algae to produce large quantities of hydrogen gas.
Certain algae are capable of using a specific enzyme to produce hydrogen gas. The researchers in this study are working to find a way to incorporate the enzyme into the photosynthesis process of the algae.
This will allow for the production of large amounts of hydrogen gas.
Algae is now considered by some to be an even better source for the production of hydrogen gas as a renewable fuel than corn.
