The main purpose of the flow chamber assay is to visualize and measure interactions between flowing cells expressing a given adhesion molecule on their surface, and their receptor, either directly coated on the flow chamber lower wall or expressed on a cell monolayer. This protocol focuses on the interactions between L-selectin expressed on neutrophils and PNAd coated onto the plastic surface. http://www.cbrinstitute.org/investigators/springer...

Cell biology (also called cellular biology or formerly cytology , from the Greek kytos , "container") is an academic discipline that studies cells – their physiological properties, their structure, the organelles they contain, interactions with their environment, their life cycle division and death . This is done both on a microscopic and molecular level. Cell biology research extends to both the great diversity of single-celled organisms like bacteria and the many specialized cells in multicellular organisms like humans Knowing the composition of cells and how cells work is fundamental to all of the biological sciences . Appreciating the similarities and also differences between cell types is particularly important to the fields of cell and molecular biology . These fundamental similarities and differences provide a unifying theme, allowing the

Cell Death Pathway Found with Link to Alzheimer's
An HMS researcher has uncovered a novel mechanism by which cells kill themselves, a discovery that provides a new direction for cell death research and suggests a potential treatment for Alzheimer's disease. Junying Yuan, associate professor of cell biology, describes her results in the Jan. 6 Nature.

Cells Are Us Bingo Activity A great activity after all cell lessons have been covered click here. This "Cells Are Us" module has five units of instruction ("Levels or Organization," "Interacting with the Outside World," and so on). Clicking on the unit titles will take you to the topic. The first unit is an introduction of the levels of organization in living systems, followed by four other units based on the main functions that cells must perform. Rather than discuss cells from the basis of their anatomy (membranes, mitochondria, nucleus, etc.), we thought it would be more interesting to emphasize what cells DO and why and how they do it. Click on any number to launch the unit of instruction. We suggest that you do "Levels of Organization" first. After that, sequence does not matter. Before we begin, let's make certain we know what a cell is. Click here Access the gallery of cell types View Concept Map of Cell Module Organization Famous Scientists: Click here if you want to review the short biographies of famous scientists mentioned in "Cells Are Us," "Organ Systems," and "Ecosystems."
