Are cephalopods safe from overfishing?
Almost everyone assumes that cephalopod overfishing won't happen. Yeah, well people used to say that about sardines too. I don't buy the argument. The rationale for squid is the same for sardines: they're short-lived, prolific, and fluctuate naturally, so they'll never be overfished.
Sardines famously crashed in California in the 1940s, illustrating the problem
. During a down cycle of low reproduction, heavy fishing continued . Instead of dropping naturally to something like 20% of peak numbers, the overfished sardine collapsed to around 0.1%, and took decades to recover. They missed the next "boom" period because there were too few breeding sardines left.
So what's the future for cephalopod fisheries? Some squid fisheries have collapsed in the past, in California and elsewhere, and future crashes are likely if management doesn't improve . The blame is usually placed on natural fluctuations, but fishing has certainly played at least a contributing factor. For the most part, squid are fished with few restraints worldwide, based on nothing little more than hope. This is not a good long-term strategy.
OK, so squid may be vulnerable, how about other cephalopods? Will there be major fisheries for other cephalopods someday? Seem unlikely? Well, nothing is unlikely in ocean fisheries. If there's a market for hagfish (aka slime eels), then there's a market for anything.

Ordovician Gallery > Cephalopods
Fossil cephalopods are extinct ancestors of today's squid, octopus, and chambered nautilus. A good web resource on living cephalopods is Dr. James Wood's Cephalopod Page . The large channel running the length of the animal is the siphuncle, through which a liquid was pumped to aid in buoyancy. The mechanism of the modern Nautilus involves pumping blood through a strand of tissue running the length, changing an osmotic gradient against the surrounding salt water, and releasing gases into the emptying chamber. The animal can achieve neutral buoyancy in relation to the surrounding water. The separate chambers are septum. It may be that Ordovician cephalopods had no predators early on, except possibly other cephalopods, and were among the largest invertebrates during the Ordovician. With the arrival of large fish in the Devonian, they must have faced new competition in their position at or near the top of the food chain.
Following is a series of pictures involving my reconstruction of a highly fragmentary cephalopod, probably an Endoceras. I did this strictly for personal reward certainly not for profit. I realize this is somewhat eccentric today, but people did this sort of thing before succumbing passively to radio, television and the internet. A friend of mine and I discovered it in abandoned quarry in Goodhue County in October 1998. It wasn't an accident we were looking for fossils in this region. The quarry sat at the edge of a farm field, and was excavated to a level a few meters below the surface soil and glacial till.

    More giant cephalopods
While trying to answer a query from Neil on the previous post , I discovered that there was an even bigger fossil cephalopod out there than the Parapuzosia I showed you yesterday (offhand, I gave the size of Parapuzosia as 2.5 m, which is apparently not entirely correct. The actual fossil itself is around 2 m in diameter, but is missing most of the living chamber [cephalopod shells are divided into a number of successive chambers, with the actual animal only occupying the youngest chamber] - 2.5 m is an estimated size if the living chamber were intact). Cameroceras was an straight-shelled endoceratid 'nautiloid' in the early Ordovician that reached about 10 m in length, though there seems to be some uncertainty - reading between the lines, I'm guessing that we don't have an entirely intact shell for Cameroceras either, and the total size is again an estimate. But note that that length doesn't include tentacles!
The picture at the top of the post comes from here , but note that the site linked is obviously a collection of pictures taken from elsewhere (a number of them even have the unmistakeable style of Palaeos.org's

    Jubilee for Cephalopods
Senior ocean analyst Kate Wing says that global warming has caused the waters off the west coast of North America to become anoxic, which has led to massive die-offs of sea life. But there is always life in death. As Wing so beautifully put it, all this death has resulted in a "jubilee for cephalopods."
Fishermen are reporting droves of giant Humboldt squid, who have come to the edges of these anoxic zones to feast upon the dead and dying hake . If I may quote more than one of my readers: I for one welcome our squid overlords.
    Thanks for the article, Ida.
